I had the groin dissection in 2005 and I formed a seroma (fluid pocket) and a hematoma (collection of blood that can harden) as well as a lot of scar tissue. You should discuss it with your doctor but it seems likely that what you are feeling is one of those issues. I still have some hard places in the area near surgery and they are scar tissue which can be very fine but a lot of little scar tissue can form a hard mass. Best of luck, Carver

Hi Jewel,
I am sorry that your husband and you are going through this. I had a deep nodular primary and a positive node (sentinel node). I did have a groin lymph node dissection because the sentinel node was positive but decided against further treatment. I am 6 and a half years out from surgery and haven't recurred. I am followed by an oncologist and dermatologist and probably will be indefinitely but so far so good. I was offered interferon and personally didn't think it improved my odds and was concerned about the toxicity. No two people are the same but for me what I did (no adjuvant treatment) has worked so far. I was 47 when diagnosed and am a mom but my daughter was in college at the time. I mention that because I don't know what I would have done if if I had a younger child but even in that case I wasn't impressed with the stats on interferon although I know many have done it and felt like it was beneficial. We are all individuals so no advise but wishing you and your husband all the best, Carver

By the way, I've been thinking about you guys and checked the boards for the first time in ages. I updated my profile pics with a new one rather than the anonymous one of me at about age 3. I was doing that for my blog etc and thought I'd do it here. The test was that after doing it when I clicked on my name after replying to a main board page the profile had my 3 year old self but when I hit refresh it had my 53 year old new shot. However, when I tried it again the same thing happened so I didn't know if I started a new thread if it would be 3 year old me or 53 year old me. Sort of weird but way too inconsequial to waste all this space explaining when testing would have done fine. Cheers, Carver

When I had my left groin sentinel node biopsy, my sentinel node was positive and the wide excision on my thigh done at the same time had an additional 2.8 mm of residual dermal melanoma on the thigh. My initial biopsy of the lesion on my thigh was a shave and that's how I was diagnosed with a nodular melanoma at least 6.9 mm thick followed by what was there during the wide excision. I then had the left groin dissection in March of 2005 and I have not had any recurrences. I don't think I'm who you were thinking about but I did have more melanoma on the thigh after the original biopsy so some similarities. Best of luck to you, Carver

That is very similar to my experiences and in both cases mine were benign but my doctors excised them comppletely and did a biopsy to be safe. In my case not too long after my groin LND I had a marble sized lipoma excised by my dermatologist that was near my LND scar. Then a year or so later I had a very large lipoma on my back which my surgical oncologist had to excise. Prior to that excision they did an MRI which showed it likely benign and that it wasn't in the bone but to be safe my surgical oncologist removed the whole thing. I lucked out both times with bengin lipomas. I hope that will be the case with you. Take care, Carver

My situation was different because I had a groin LND and did have drains for a long time but even after the drains as well as injections with stuff to help dry me out, I had a seroma form in the pelvic area that was quite large. My doctor kept an eye on it but said to give it time to dissolve. It took many months. At one point it was almost as big as an orange then lemon and then finally went away although I was left with a hardened area with a lot of scar tissue. This was six years ago but that was my experience. I hope yours will go away soon. Take care, Carver
