This is very interesting to read. My PET scans have shown that I have "uptake" in my left knee, but my onc says that it is probably due to post surgical "something". I had a mole removed from the side of my knee which was atypical, but not melanoma. A year later I was diagnosed with mm in a node in my groin on that same leg. That was removed and then later more nodes were removed in my pelvis. I had the surgeon take a sample of the tissue surrounding the area where the mole was removed. They found no evidence of mm. I have considerable swelling in that leg due to lymphadema and have pain in my knee. I am wondering now if I should insist on a biopsy of that knee.
I hope you turn out OK with the decision you make.

Your situation sounds similar to mine. In July of 2008 I had a "suspicious" mole removed from my left thigh near my knee. It was determined that it wasn't melanoma and the margins were clear. A year and a month later I found the enlarged lymph gland in my left groin, it was removed and found to be melanoma. More lymph nodes were removed from that area and then from deeper in my pelvis. I also asked to have some of the tissue removed from the site where the mole was and have it tested. The margins were still clear. I had the high dose interferon for just 4 weeks. Soon after a PET scan reveled 4 mets in my liver which were removed by radio frequency ablation. I have been NED since then, 2 1/2 years.
The cancer center where I was treated now has a melanoma clinic and I asked them about the mole. I was told that sometimes the cancer can start in one place and them move on without a trace. Sounds possible. This may be what happened to you.
I wish you luck in finding a good melanoma specialist and a better treatment plan. Come back to this site often. The wonderful people here are full of useful information, encouragement and comfort.
My hope for a beast free 2013.

I have PET scans every six months. I had head CT's with the last two (my last scan was today). I am stage four and am am NED since 04/10 and hope that tomorrow I will find out that I am still NED when I meat with the Melanoma Clinic in Grand Rapids, MI for the first time. I will post their recommendations for further scans.

That is such wonderful news! I am in the grips of scanxiety right now. I'm stage IV, NED since April 2009 after liver mets taken out with radio frequency ablation. My scan is next week. You give me hope. My prayers for continued clear scans for you.
