I wanted to update everyone about my Mom's condition. She was admitted into the hospital yesterday. She came down to town to go to her Radiation Oncologist about starting WBR her appointment was at one o clock. at 8:00AM she had her mom call 911 because she couldn't move. She went into the emergency room in severe pain. Nothing they could do could stop the pain and get her to be able to move on her own. We still wanted her to go to her appointment but she just couldn't make it. She was admitted into the hospital at 2:45 and put on a hydromorphone drip. She has a push button that enables her to administer as much morphine as she needs and they are also giving her norco's. She was in and out of consciousness and in distress when we left. Last night was good she was coherent and up and talking to all of us. We got to say goodbye and that we loved her very much. She is still at the hospital now and they are trying as hard as they can to manage her pain. She fought so hard and long and unfortunately her body just couldn't take it anymore. I told her how much everyone on here loves her and that you guys say how strong she is and that you all love her. That brought her comfort. I pray that she doesn't have to suffer much longer and that soon the pain and suffering will be gone and she will finally be at peace without sickness and hurt. I do have a question for anyone that might know. She really wanted to donate her body to science but her boyfriend does not know where the paperwork is for that. If we can not find the paperwork what can we do to ensure that her wishes are fuflfilled and that her body does get donated to science for melanoma research? It is still hard to believe that this is happening. I will miss her so much.

Also they are having a hard time with managing her pain. I don't know if there is something more that they can do for it. It is Neuropathic pain from all of the tumors in her brain. She wouldn't let anyone touch her because it hurt her so bad. It seems like there should be something else that they can do, but it seems like there isn't. The only thing that seems to be left to do is to let nature take its course.

No advice at this point but just want to let you know that my thoughts are with you, your mother, and the entire family at this tough time. As people noted on the other post, your mother has been a real inspiration and valiant fighter. I pray her pain will be managed and am glad to hear you have all been able to spend time with her over these last few months and especially these last few days.

Oh, gosh, Hillary! Gosh and darn! I know this does not come as a surprise to anyone, but stil, it's a blow. I am so sorry for Denise and for you and for your whole family.
As you say, pain control is paramount now. The best thing you could do would be to try to find a pain management specialist. Large teaching hospitals sometimes have them on staff; smaller community hospitals don't but they may know of a nearby pain management specialist you could consult with.
If a pain mangement specialist is not available (a woeful oversight in the American healthcare system) then you could ask Denise's doctors to give her a high dose Fentanyl patch in addition to what she is getting now. If that doesn't work, try to get her on something called Prialt (trade name Ziconotide). It is not an opiod; it is a snail toxin. It has to be injected into the spinal column (often attached to a pump like the Dilaudid) and it directly blocks pain nerve transmission in the brain and spinal column.
If Denise is not already on hospice care, try to get her on hospice now. The hospice team will come to the hospital and they are really good at pain management.
As for donating her body to science, talk to the hospital social worker about that. She should have the necessary forms. But be aware that the nearby medical schools and researchers may not need a body at this particular time. It's nothing personal, just a matter of timing.
Please know that I am with you and Denise in spirit. You are both in my prayers always.

Thank you. She does have a pain management specialist and we have been in contact with her. They are giving her the pump hydromorphone norcos and attavan. That seems to help her get some relief at times but sh still is moaning and uncomfortable at times. Her doctor will see her tomorrow and I have advised my grandma to talk with her doctor and specialist about the things that you said. -

Hi, so sorry to hear of your pain. Your mom is highly thought of here and I wish her peace. I am relatively new to the board but just wanted you to know that the Hospital Social Worker should be able to help answer your questions about donation. Bigger hospitals have someone in charge of donations in general. Ask questions of them, they will help you. Prayers going out to your mom and family. Lynnette

I am so so sorry to read this. Denise is such an incredibly persistent fighter … it comes through in her posts always. I do not know what to say here except that I am so sorry for these incredibly difficult days and am praying for you and your family this morning. Hopefully the pain management is going better now. If the opportunity arises, you can let her know she is loved here on the mpip board and folks are praying for her.

I remember your mother and many of her posts here over the last few years. As many others have done in the past, she came here to ask questions and offer assistance to others who may have needed it during their own difficult times in dealing with this monster. Please take comfort in knowing your mother did all she could for both herself and others here. It is indeed most admirable of anyone that would try to assist others while having to deal with their own serious personal battle. This speaks volumes of the type of person Denise is.
As others have said, please keep in contact with the pain management team and hosipce to try to keep her as comfortable as possible during the remainder of this journey.

Prayers of love, comfort, healing and peace to Denise and her family. There are so many here, who love and care about Denise and have been with her every step of the way. Denise has touched hundreds and hundreds of lives on this website and I know all are praying for her now and holding her close in their hearts, mind and spirit. Denise has taught us all so much about staying strong and persevering through incredible, almost impossible health challenges and never giving up on her vision of a cure for herself and others. Denise continued to show compassion and guidance to so many here and offered so much help to those who come to this site. She is a remarkable lady in every way and I know it brings great sadness to those surrounding her now and our MPIP family here, to follow her journey down this path.
Please know prayers will continue to flow for our friend Denise and her family.

Oh, Hillary, I am so sorry to hear that your sweet Mom is in such pain. Please tell your grandmother that she has to be insistent that the staff do whatever it takes to get that under control. Your mother has fought so hard; she really deserves some peace now. She will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I just found out. I had a premonition I guess. My prayers are with you and your entire family. Denise will always have a special place in my heart. I had spoken to her right after her diagnosis and knew what she was facing. Denise I love you and will see you in due time. R.I.P.
