I am in my 6mo of Interferon treatment, currently 3 subQ injections per week.
The first dose during the high dose infusion (5 days a week for 20days) was uncomfortable. I had fever, chills and aches that night that were about 3 hr in duration and then it was gone. It is like having the Flu. After the first HD infusion I did not have these symptoms again with the HD infusion.
I had the same fever, chills and aches with the first subQ Injection. I did not have the symptoms again after the first SubQ injection.
I did notice a little dizziness but that dissipated around the 3 month of treatment.
I also has mild nausea (took zophran) but I have been able to stop zophran about 5 weeks ago.
I understand that each person is different and have different symptoms as will as duration of symptoms.
I stay well hydrated and take Aleve twice a day.
As a side note I had my 6mo PETCT today and was still NED!
Best wishes on your treatment decision.

Peter,
I am 6mo into my interferon treatment, scans scheduled on 12/1/11. I had all the symptoms you described on my first high dose infusion as well as with my first injection. I did not have these symptoms again ( during my treatment) until I took a break for the holiday and did not receive a injection for 6 days, needless to say the injection gave me the same symptoms as my initial first injection.
During my high does infusion I received the following daily prior to Interferon..
1000mL saline
25mg Benadryl
IV Zophran
Oral compazine
600mg Advil
I also took in as much water as possible.
I switched from Advil to Aleve and also noticed a difference, my Onc likes Aleve.
I wish you well with your treatment and hope that your symptoms decrease over time.

Donna,
I finished the High Dose Infusion a few months ago and I am currently about 2mo or so into the injection phase. Like your spouse the first High Dose infusion was rough on me, but it got better and I never had as severe symptoms as I did after the first infusion again (thank goodness)
I received 100mL pre-hydration, ibuprofen, Benadryl, IV zophran and oral Compazine prior to each infusion of Interferon.
My injections are 50% the dose of the infusions and I have tolerated those much better and the effects seem much less severe to me. I do notice that the Monday injection is more noticeable sometimes than the Wed and Fri injection. My Onc says this is sometimes the case for alot of people due to 2 days of non-treatment. I have had good and bad nights (most bad are on Mondays if they happen).
I had brain fog, dizzy feelings and some nausea (controlled by zophran). I was taking Advil but have recently switch to Aleve.
I did have days and weeks that I was ready to stop treatment and had very similar thoughts about do I want to feel bad for 12 months.
Just when I was ready to pull the plug on treatment …My labs have improved this week and I fell about 99% normal for the first time in months with virtually no symptoms.
I drink plenty of water throughout the day and rest when my body tells me to.
I have been able to continue to work, 50% during the High Dose Infusions (due to 3hr infusion protocol) and back to 100% during the injections.
Like others have stated each person is different and reacts differently to Interferon.
I wish you and your husband the best on your journey.

Ursula,
I found that hydration helped me during the treatment. I consumed a lot of water (often high pH) to me it just had a better taste and that was my main reason for using high pH water. I also use Aleve in place of Ibuprofin, it works better for me and my Onc. also reccomended it, it allows me to take fewer pills. I did use Zofran during the early months of my injections but as time went by I was able to stop all medications with the exception of Aleve. I found that I learned what to eat, how much and when to go easy on meals and that helped with nausea without medication. If you need meds for nausea, take them, thay really helped me when I needed them, also Zofran does not make you drowsy like some other meds do.
I maintained failry normal activity but I tried to listen to what my body was telling me. When you feel tired REST, it is amazing how much this can help.
The early months I found it somewhat diffucult to concentrate but that eased up in later months.
It was as much a mental challenge as a physical challenge to get to this point and I am thankful I am close to finishing the treatment. I wanted to do everything possible to improve my situiation. I know that I would be upset with myself if I did not throw everything available at this thing.
Best wished on your treatment!!
