Since being upped to Stage IV nearly 5 weeks ago, I've done a lot of research concerning alternative medicine and diet. I've also had a lot of people reach out to me who are melanoma survivors and other cancer survivors. It seems like all of them made drastic changes to their diet. Many were also treated holistically. What have some of you done concerning alternative medicine and diet? One problem I am having is contradictory opinions and research. It makes it difficult to know what to do.
once again, I'd appreciate anyone's advice! Thanks!

Ashley, no doubt that you'll find lots of different opinions here (as evidenced by similar threads). I've made no drastic changes since being diagnosed Stage IV approx 18-19 mos ago (other than when I had ipi-induced colitis). I also don't take supplements or use holistic treatments. (I'm not necessarily against any of those things, but I'm also not aware of proven benefits from a pure melanoma standpoint.) I'd recommend the book Anti-Cancer (which others here have recommended) if you're interested in dietary changes, etc. I've made some small changes based on that book. The author's other books are also good.

I’m giving a testimony about Dr. KOKOBI the great Herbalist, he has the
cure to all manner of diseases, he cured my breast cancer, though I
went through different website I saw different testimonies about
different spell casters and herbalist, I was like: ‘Many people have
the breast cancer remedy, So why are people still suffering from it?’ I thought of
it, then I decided to contact [email protected] , I didn’t believe him that
much, I just wanted to give him a try, he replied my mail and Needed
some Information about me, then I sent them to him, he prepared it
(CURE) and sent it to Airfreight Online Courier Service for delivery,
he gave my details to the Courier Office, they told me that 3-5 days I
will receive the package and i took the medicine as prescribed by him
and I went for check-up 1 week after finishing the medicine, I was
tested breast cancer negative, if you are breast cancer patient or any cancer patient at all. Do me
a favour for you to contact him and I will try my possible best to make
sure you get cured, when you contact him, make sure you tell him that
I referenced you.. contact him via: [email protected] or whatsapp +254746618873 -

Hi there Ashley,
I know this is a hot-botton topic….with people arguing both sides. For me, it comes down to how my body has responded when I have changed my diet for the healthier.
I've proved it to myself twice now, that living a healthier, less processed chemicals, more natural foods life, with more raw organic fruits and veggies makes my body healthier. And that's all the proof I need. I changed a lot of things when I was diagnosed as stage 4, and I am doing great. So I just keep up with all the healthy ways, as I know they are working for me.
All my best to you, Laurie

hi ashley-
Though I am not stage IV, I thought I would add this.
I have seen several Melanoma specialists (oncologists) in the NY and Phila area.
One of them told me she has her melanoma patients taking the following:
Resveratrol- 500 mg one pill once a day
Tumeric- 500 mg one pill twice a day
Paba- (para-ameno- benzoic- acid) 500 mg or 1000mg tablets- take total of 1000mg per day
She explained her rationale…had an interesting story about the PABA.
There is lots written about the benefits of Resveratrol and Melanoma ….
I dont have anythng to add on diet, nor have i ever been a "supplement" taker, but i will certainly take my docrots suggestion on these three above mentipend supplements.
Hope that helps!

I've been a vegetarian since 99 but november with diagnosis i have added a plethora of suppliments. Turmeric, turkey tail, garlic with cyenne, selenium, milk thistle, oil of oregano, b complex b17 to name a few. changed to a raw diet and lots of juicing. hoping this will do it for me. good luck and health to you.

Hi Ashley,I used to post a lot about alternate info, but this board members still believes mostly in drug treatments. I am always researching for other cures or treatments in the event that my melanoma comes back. The first thing that you must absolute eliminate is all SUGAR's in your diet. Dr. Rusell Blaylock has proved that aspartame used in anything foods? especially "diet" products has a lot to do with melanoma. Spend a little time to learn all the new trick words that are the same as aspartame and artificial sugars.Best wishes,Gene-

Gene went off of the Ipi in Dec. 2013 and remains free of cancer plus was free for almost a year before.
He has been doing a lot of research for our daughter who has colon cancer and peritoneal carcinomatosis. She is unable to take the chemo cocktail as it was making her very sick so checking on alternative therapy.

Ashley,
This does tend to be a hot button topic. I am stage 4 – been NED a little over a year now since the surgery to remove the fist-sized tumor in my small intestine. I have been taking vitamin D3 and vitamin C supplements prior to advancing to stage 4 and continue to do so. Since advancing, I added turmeric to the list. I exercise several times a week and have always done so.
What I have not done in any way is change my diet. I drink alcohol – really into bourbon actually. I eat dessert – chocolate, ice cream… love it. I eat plenty of meat and do not care much for fruits and vegetables (although my wife occassionally forces me to eat some). Food is part of life and if you cannot eat and drink the things you like then you are not living. I am 40 years old – if someone told me that I could be guaranteed another 40 years if all I did was give up eating meat, give up drinking alcohol, give up all forms of sugar… then I would take my chances on not making it those 40 more years. Life is short. Do what makes you happy. Have faith in God above. My two cents.

Yes, Ashley,
For some reason things can get pretty crazy around here when folks start talking about diet. As a pediatric nurse practitioner, I have spent years teaching parents how to feed their children a healthy diet filled with veggies and fruit, a little meat, no junk!!! I am a pretty good individual case study about melanoma and diet as well!! I have been dubbed something of a health food and exercise fanatic my entire life! I think "fanatic" is an over statement….but I was eating quinoa and spaghetti squash long before they were cool. I eat almost no processed or fast food. I eat very little sweets. Don't like them. I know! Weird, right? And this is for a lifetime! Yet, at the age of 39 I developed melanoma. I continued my good diet and exercise plan. I progressed to Stage IV in 2010. With anti-PD1, surgeries, and SRS….I am NED. I still believe that diet, exercise and a healthy lifestyle are important to human health and well being. However, it will not prevent or cure melanoma. Dang sure wish it would!!!! Yours, Celeste

I don't think it could be put any better than what Celeste said. I even asked my doctors and the response I have gotten time after time is that a healthy diet is imprtant for overall health but they cant attribute my intial diagnosis or recurrences to what was in my diet. I went raw, green drinks, smoothies, no sugar….went to Stage 4. So I stick to moderation and try to think of my overall well being so I take a little bit of what everyone said here…I'll drink Bourbon…not often at all but when I do it's quite a few and I enjoy it. Not a big meat eater but I won't shy away from it…love my pasta though and yes Celeste is a little strange for not liking sweets at all; I'm just somewhat picky on which sweets I'll eat. I love to lift weights and I'm stronger now than I have been at any point of my life. I don;t have the cardio fitness that I had as a 20yr old Marine but I still thrown down in raquetball and with a little dedication can knock out a half marathon. I'm the furthest thing from perfect on "healthy" lifestyle but I also want to enjoy life…like Kevin said. Really a hot topic…I love to hear all the different responses. I guess it really a personal choice but again…I think Celeste is spot on…better for overall health.

I just want to say, as a newer member of the forums, how much I appreciate and value the thoughtful and respectful comments that are routinely made here. I have had very different experiences on other melanoma support sites, so just wanted to say "thank you" to all of the caring and intelligent people whom I learn from here each day.

I think it is imperative that you look at diet, lifestyle and supplements.
It is best you do all you can to stack the odds in your favour.
I think you need a good naturopath or experienced cancer healer to help you.
The best researched supplements and the number one supplement for melamano should be Avemar or fermented wheat germ extract. I would also add large doses of good quality pancreatic enzymes.
I would add other supplements like IP6 inositol, Coenzyme Q10, mistletoe, betaglucans, reservatol, green tea extract, curcumin, flaxseed oil, krill oil, quercitin.
I would also look at detox like near infrared saunas, liver flushes, coffeee enemas, juice fasts , colonics, heavy metal detox using sodium alginate , wholistic dental approaches.
For diet organic foods eating plenty of good fats and oils along with grass fed beef, lamb.
Off label drugs that have proven effective in some people with melanoma include: cimitidene tagamet, celebrex, metaformin and tamifoxin.(not sure i spelled those right!}
Alternative treatments for melanoma include local and whole body hyperthermia, electrotherapy ie zappers,

Thanks everyone. I've gotten so many opinions, it's really been confusing! For now I am eliminating processed foods, watching acid/alkinine levels, and cutting out sugar. I see a holistic healer in a few weeks, so we'll see what she says!
