Can anyone recommend a melanoma specialist at MDA.  Dr. Davies was recommended but can't get in to see him until Sept 2.  I can probably get in with someone else next week.  Is there someone else just as good or wait one more week for Dr. Davies?  Thanks for any recs.

      Brian-

Davies is my primary onc there but I all think they're very capable. Davies only sees patients on Friday. I've see Dr. Diab…he was good. I also saw a woman but don't remeber her name. Anyway, I think they all have only 1-2 days in office and are doing research much of the other time. Hope that helps some.

        Hi Brian,

My husband sees Dr. Rodabe Amaria.  John's MD Anderson melanoma surgeon Dr. Cormier recommended her. I think Josh is right, they usually see patients 2 days a week.  I know we last saw her in July on Tuesday so that must be one of her days.  In the past we have also seen her on Fridays.  She really knows her stuff and the current treatment options.  I believe she has done research on BRAF specific therapies as well.

        Good luck!

Thanks Jackie and Josh.  I'm sure if they are at MDA they're no slouch.  I'll probably stick with first available.

I saw Dr. Glitza for a second opinion and was very happy with her- she was straightforward and went through all of my options, answered every question and helped me to decide my next move.  A friend sees Dr. Hwu and recommends him highly too.  I think they're all very smart and knowledgable people.

      Brian, additional tips:

      1.  Use MDA's service for flight arrangements.  5 percent discount on United, but more importantly, no change fees.  At each visit, I had to change my return flight to accommodate additional appts.

      2.  Try to stay at the Rotary House which is connected by Skybridge to MDA.

      3.  One of the reasons to see Davies is that he is also a senior administrator within the group–can't hurt when he is referring you to surgeons, other docs, etc. within the group.

      4.  I originally tried to see Hwu.  I don't believe he sees new patients due to his senior admin role.

        Thanks Peggy and Mat.

I'll definitely look into the Rotary House.  I did inquire about Hwu and you are right, since he became chair of the department he is no longer taking new patients.  I'm scheduled with Dr. Tawbi on the 25th.  Really wanted to see Davies but his earliest is a week later and as the days and now weeks pass I'm starting to get more anxious so I'm sticking with Tawbi.  Other than my appointment with Weber I haven't had the best of luck getting appointments scheduled.  Was supposed to have an appointment at Duke yesterday.  They called early in the morning and informed me the Doc was sick and wouldn't be seeing patients.  UGH!

Mat, my appointment is on a Thursday.  I think my Davies appointment was going to be on a Friday.  In those cases where you might have several days of appointments do they expect you to stay through the weekend and start again on Monday or do they work through the weekend?

Brian, when I saw Davies last fall, I think his hours were on Monday so I didn't need to stay over.  I suspect that while they may do testing/labs over the weekend–they do not have regular clinic hours.

      Hi

I have an appointment on Tuesday with Dr Amaria. I am assuming and hoping to get my scans done. However I booked our return flight on Thursday 8/25. Now I am worried I will not get my results before I leave.

Yikes…Does anyone know if Dr Amaria could maybe fit me in Thursday? I am waiting for a call back.

      Thanks
