I am sorry to read about your husband passing.  I hope that you can find some comfort in the fact that he passed peacefully.  Cherish the memories.  I will pray for you and your famiy during this difficult time.  My husband is also losing his long  battle with melanoma.  I expect to be writing a message just like yours soon.

              Hi Janet,

My husband recently had a brain met.  He had surgery and then cyber knife to the surgical bed and to one other small met that was inoperable.  He also had radiation to a tumor on his jaw at the same time.  The tumor on the jaw is almost entirely disappeared, but the cyber knife to the brain did not work.  It has already grown bad in the radiated area as well as developing in several other areas of the brain.  They have sent him home on Hospice care.  However, he has continued to take the Zelboraf his doctor has put him on and seems much better the last couple of days.  Maybe the Zelboraf is working and there is a miracle in store for us.

The radiation to your husband's pelvic area may be working, even if the cyber knife did not work on the brain.  My husband had cyber knife to a lung met last summer and it worked but the cyber knife in his brain did not work.  Melanoma is very tricky……just plain nasty!!!

Glad to hear that Randy is responding to treatment.  Did he have to fail Yervoy before being allowed to get into an anti-pd1 trial?  Randy sounds very similar to my husband, who also has lung and brain mets and a chest wall tumor.  We are currently looking for treatment for him.  He had previously been on a MEK trial.  We were told that he could not get into a anti-pd1 trial without failing Yervoy first, which is a relatively new requirement.

                          Janet,

Thank you for your update.  This is very valuable information for me.  My husband is also a V600R mutation and we are waiting for our insurance company to approve his prescription to start Zelboraf.  It has been a few days and we have heard nothing.  I did not think that it was going to be a problem to get approval since it was FDA approved.  Your post has really opened my eyes and perhaps this is the reason that I have not heard anything about the prescription pre-authorization.

My husband had brain mets and had some surgically removed and cyberknifed in Jan. and Feb.  He has been off systemic treatment since early Jan.  We can see the other tumors growing.  He was waiting for a trial but his doctor said that he cannot wait any longer and prescribed Zelboraf.  I will be making calls tomorrow to see where we stand in this process.  I think that you are totally correct the insurance companies try NOT to pay or pay as LITTLE as possible.  We have had our insurance company take back money from hospitals…in one case they took more than they paid in the first place!!!!!

I am glad to hear that Don finally got the Zelboraf, in spite of the insurance company.  I hope that it works quickly for him. Please keep us posted about his progress.  I would be extremely interested to see how he responds as a V600R, since my husband is the same mutation.

                                Marc,
My daughter saw an ocular oncologist today. However she was left with a lot of questions. It seems that her tumor has some unusual qualities. I will look up the person that you mentioned. Thank you so much for your reply and concern. It is very appreciated.

Thank you so much for your reply and concern. My daughter saw an ocular oncologist in Madison today. However, she left with more questions than answers. They are going to do testing to see if the ocular tumor is a primary or metastasized tumor, which seems reasonable. Now to wait for scheduling and test results.

                                    Melanie,
Thank you so much for the information. My daughter is devastated since she knew what my husband went thru with melanoma. There are no symptoms with this kind of melanoma so it really blindsided us. We are praying that this has not metastizied. I do recall that with my husband, we had to be our own advocate. Most medical professionals that we came in contact with in the beginning of his journey were not helpful at all. Thank you again for the information it will be extremely helpful as we begin this journey. Your kindness and knowledge are very much appreciated.
