I'm so sorry.  If this was a new mole though, it likely wasn't a recurrence, but rather a new primary unrelated to your first one.  Hoping it's shallow and low risk!

      Hi Beth,

Your feelings are very normal for someone newly diagnosed.  The Dr already looked at this freckle, so I'm sure it's nothing to worry about.  I can't tell you how many times I've been CONVINCED I have another melanoma just to find out its benign.  All that worrying for nothing!  Raised freckles are normal for me.  Changing is key.  You probably have not been watching your skin, so start today and that will empower you.  Cancer grows and changes.  So get to know your skin as it is now.  It's good you do not have a lot of freckles/moles to watch!  You'll be fine.

I'm an identical twin.  She hasn't had melanoma, but has the exact same type of moles/freckles I do.  She also has had similar sun exposure.

Okay, very confused by the responses here.  Melanoma in situ is confined to the epidermis. There are two responses here of people saying melanoma in situ has become metastatic.  I find that hard to beleive.  Did you all / your loved ones get second opinions on your pathology?  Did you obtain and read the report for yourself?  Biopsy type only matters when the lesion is intersected (cut in half).  In situ is confined to epidermis and has NO depth, there it would be removed with shave (unless lateral margins were involved which would be stated in path report).

For the original poster – I'm sure your margins are fine.  If it were me, I'd go in and get larger margins, but I understand why you are hesitant to.
