Derm checks are definitely not the most fun; however, after having 2 kids myself, I am no longer embarrassed by anything related to doctors.  While you are having your husband check you out, it is really important to have a doctor do so as well.

If it's any solace, I was diagnosed Stage 2B in July of 1996.  I am alive and well. I had a WLE (SNBs were not routinely performed back then) – no further treatment other than skin checks every 6 months with my derm – now they are yearly, unless I notice something I feel has changed.  Never saw an oncologist.  Be filled with HOPE, not despair.  Stress is a killer as well – need to try to let go of that unncessary stress.  If you can't, talk to your doctor for help in dealing with the depression.  Good luck, stay focused and be well!

Also, why is your doc doing shave biopsies?  They should never, ever be done, especially on someone who has already been diagnosed with melanoma.

I was diagnosed with Stage IIB in July of 1996.  I had a WLE, no SNB as they were not routinely done back then; no further treatment other than skin checks every 6 mos.  No recurrence; I have had quite a few biopsies over the years with none being more than moderately atypical.  I just check in once in a while to see how folks are doing.

My derm has never done a shave biopsy and I've had at least 20 since 1996.  If it is worrisome enough to take off, it is worrisome enough to cut out.
