Hi everyone,
Good news: Dad finally got to come home from the Rehab Hospital on Friday. He is doing well, walking on his own (slowly) doing small sets of stairs, bathing etc. Its going to take some time before he gets all of his strength back, but I have faith that he will. He will be having therapy at home to help with this.
He had all 82 staples taken out of his head on Friday. On Monday 10/31 he will have a port o cath placed, then on Tuesday 11/1 he has his first dose of NIVO. Finally!!!! I am hoping that it isn't to much time in between the Gamma Knife and first dose of NIVO for the benefit of the absopal effect. We shall see.
I will update to let you know how the first dose goes. Fingers and toes crossed that it goes well.

Hi Jenn
Thanks for the latest update. I was wondering how you were getting on. Will cross my fingers and toes for you too.
Have you considered probiotics to try and minimize possible gut side effects ? Some have used this to treat collitis etc after the event – but I am taking them now Biokult etc to try to help myself before it happens.
Hope all goes well tomorrow

Yay for progress! : ) 82 staples? Eah gads… that makes the tiny hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Both of my crani's were self absorbant stitches. Only had 3 staples to keep a bandage in place for two days on the second one. Didn't hurt to have them removed, but was a very weird feeling. 82…. **shudder**
Hope all goes well with the Nivo on Tuesday! Crossing fingers and toes that not only does he experience few to zero side effects, but also starts responding quickly and fully! How long between the start of Nivo and his next brain MRI?

Thanks Niki. I know, that was alot of staples, he had some in the front and some in the back. The doctor did any amazing job saving his hair. You really can't tell that he had much of anything done, its crazy. I believe he will have another MRI in 2 weeks. I will keep you posted!

Hi,
I've been really admiring your fight with your father through this board as a person with some similarities and some differences in my own battle (brain, spine, meninges, some SRS, but not as much, one full craniotomy for large tumor). People are tolerating Nivo quite well happy he's starting and I myself have had 3 cycles of Ipi-Nivo with only minimal Diarrhea cropping up after cycle 3 that is well-controlled with basic Imodium.
You guys using the best medical treatments available in an informed and positive way and you foughtto get here. Enjoy the good days, and hope that they will soon become the norm because you deserve it.

I always am looking for post on how your dad is doing- so glad to hear of his progress. How comforting to have you by his side supporting and loving him. Remember to take care of yourself too- find time to do some of the things that help fill you up now and then. For me it's hiking and knitting;)
All the best-

Hi, first time giving my story, i been on site, for a year. Snow white, tomorrow we meet with Dr Dumas, to review our MRI. Long story, 1 1/2 years ago we went to Hoag, for simple procedure with Afib. The doctor at ER said, all is good with Afib, but I knowtice you have not had Xray on chect for 1/2 years. He ask if you mind if we do a Xray? Of course we said yes. He came back with a different look on his face, he had melanoma on skin removed 3 1/2 years prior, check limph nodes, all clear.
The person that did surgery never said have a xray, or MRI, just to to his derm doctor to check skin. Well he had stage IV, maybe 6 months. I believe in prayers, next day met with doctor, said yes stage IV, going to the power of prayer, week later, he had a smile on his face, cancer is isolated, we could operate.
Again Hoag, in Newport Beach, we had a surgeon that goes to City of Hope, and other places, Kr Joyal, I will verify, the best!
Here, with your dad, we could relate, cancer went to the brain, we want the best doctor, we research, and chose Dr Duma, at Newport Beach,ca.He did gamma knife, removed to turmors, was so close to mobility. First one, he was done, in 45 minutes. The second was serious, but he felt confident, and yes, he could not walk, speak, ready to give up. Dr Duma, said he will be out in a week, well, end up in rehab, just like your dad.
Going one step ahead, I want you to know how I found my doctor, oncologist fro Hoag. The one they she did do right, she said chemo does not work on stage IV melanoma. Long story, but, our therapy nurse, was fellowing this girl who was so advanced in melanoma, but was in a clincal study, and on 6 years survivor.
She came over the fellowing week, I ask, do you know the doctor on the clinical studay, she said Doctor Antone Ribas, UCLA, he ran and got Keytruda approved.
I read, all with melanoma, yes, you have to go to melanoma doctor. My husband is on his 8 infusion, Dr Duma said 3 month ago scan, NED, body scan turmors are shrinking.
We said, so far to travel, being that we live in Huntington Beach, his colleage, goes to Torrance office, Monday and Tuesday.
Oh and yes, he did not have infusion for 2 to 3 weeks.
One day, I being first time on this forum, want everyone to get a melanoma specialist!
Good Luck, and God Bless, oh tomorrow we review our MRI with Dr Duma, funny, sweet, and he sure know what he is doing with gamma knife and and surgery.
