I had the PET scans last Thursday along with a brain MRI. The nurse called on Friday and said the PET Scan was clean, but they did not have any results for the brain MRI. I was happy to hear the news but am still concerned about the Brain MRI. I know I probably shouldn't, but I started researching on the likelyhood that melanoma could spread to the brain from the leg first. Has anyone had this happen or heard of this happening?

I'm no expert and given the way my situation went…I wouldn't say never but highly unlikely. I empathize with the waiting but the PET results are big relief….been waiting for you to post. I'm praying for your good results and that you tangle with this beast is short lived….beat it down!!!!

Thanks Josh. I am just confused this go around. Last time I had melanoma, I felt like the Drs were making a mad dash for me to have the second surgery and SNB. This time it seems like a whole lot of waiting. I'm sure the Dr. just needed on the scans to come back.

Delora- melanoma is called the Black Beast. It can spread from anywhere to anywhere. No rhyme or reason to it. I'm not trying to scare you, and that being said, I've had it in lymph nodes, pelvic bone, brain and heart. Still here, still fighting, and with so much hope for tomorrow. Today's treatments are amazing. Don't freak out until all the results are in!

Hello Delora,
May I ask why you had a brain MRI? Is it standard treatment for you? I ask because like you I "only" had a melanoma on the leg, with a spread to the lymph nodes in the groin. As I experience heavy headaches quite regularly, I wonder if I should request a brain MRI. I am clean for 4 years now.
I wish you luck with waiting. -

When I was diagnosed Stage IV melanoma, my local clinical oncologist did not see any need for a brain MRI since I was showing no evidence of central nervous system involvement. Shortly afterwards I engaged a melanoma specialist at a center of excellence and he ordered a brain MRI even though I had no symptoms of brain involvement. Two small metastases were found and were radiated a year ago. It seems you are not Stage IV, so I don't know if my experience is parallel to yours, but I would certainly consult with your oncologist about the headaches, and, if you are dissatisfied with his response (or just for greater peace of mind) make sure you get a second opinion. A brain MRI is certainly not a threateniing procedure in any sense if there is any likely suspicion that there could be brain metastases. However, I am not attempting to diagnose that you should have one. Just worth pursuing more info.

Thanks for your feedback.
Actually, I asked my doctor last time I spoke with her, and her first response was that the brain wouldn't be the first place for a metastasis. That respond I liked.
Than she continued by saying that knowing you have a brain tumor will not help and will only impact the life you live. I only later realised this remark (maybe because I was happy a mole was just a mole, maybe because I liked her first part of the answer). So off course I can't really do much with that. Luckily I don't really have much other symptoms than this headache (every day at least 4 to 5 on a scale of 1 to 10). I will have a next CT scan by the end of January. I really want to see over the Christmas break if I continue to have these headaches even when I don't work and don't have any stress.

Hi,
I had the brain MRI because my melanoma is back after 12 years. The purpose of the brain MRI and PET Scan was to determine how much the cancer may have spread. I never thought about having those tests done until my melanoma came back. Hopefully yours never will!!!
