Finally going to NYU for my second opinion on my supposed 3A melanoma disease on Monday . I had an appointment with Anna Pavlik, who I wanted to see because of all the good things I heard, I am now seeing Dr. Ott in her office. Any feedback on this??
Its bad enough we have to go thru this, make the appointments in advance just to go see someone that may save your life, just to hear "sorry, something has come up." I am disgusted, aggravated and stressed to the limit.

Do you have appointment for Monday also? How strange is that. I kept my appointment with this Dr. Ott. The nurse who called said they work side by side and I should be fine. I also asked if I do need to return, can i see Dr. Pavlik, and the woman said it shouldnt be a problem.
It took me long enough to decide who to go and now get a curve ball. It just sucks.

Hi,
I have been a patient at NYU since 199 8 . The oncologist I see there is not a melanoma specialist.. long story.
I do know Dr. Pavlik and she is an incredible doctor and a wonderful human being. I do not know Dr. Ott personally l
but have heard nothing but wonderful things about Dr.Ott. I am sure Dr. Pavlik works with Dr. Ott very closely. That is
her nature. Trust you are in good hands
By the way I ran a Melanoma Support group on LI I am thinking of starting up again. Let me know if you may be interested.
If I can be of any help e mail me.. [email protected]

Thank you Carole for your encouragement. I really need to hear something about the doctors I am seeing. Especially since I was finally set I was going to go to NYU and see Pavlik. They told me that Dr. Ott and Pavlike work together so I guess I should trust that. I am going to the appointment either way on Monday, why shouldn't I, right? We are in the tri-state area. If this doesnt work out, another opinion is alright by me.
Thank you again, I feel a bit better about the whole thing….

Hi.
I have never heard of Dr. Ott. I don't know why they switched your apptmt. to meet with Dr. Ott. I wonder if Dr. Pavlick had to take off that day?…it's just not like her. She is extremely compassionate, up on the latest treatments, etc. Did they tell you why you couldn't see Dr. Pavlick? Did they tell you when you could reschedule for an apptmt. with Dr. Pavlick? If it's their fault, they should be able to squeeze you in. On the bright side, I would imagine that Dr. Ott and Dr. Pavlick work closely enough together. Keep me posted, at least on the off topic board of what happens.

I just did a quick google search on Dr. Ott. Looks like he has been practicing about 10 years or so.
I wish I knew something about him but I don't.
If you can call Monday morning and get a rescheduled one with Dr. Pavlick in a very short period of time (and they owe this to you since you had the apptmt. with her), then I would do that. I'm wondering if they are trying to funnel patients to Dr. Ott….maybe she has many more patients than him? Anyway, they should be able to accomodate you both since you had the apptmt. with her. If you talk to her scheduling assistants, Queen is always nice and Rosie is usually too but has her "bad" days where she has a bit of an "attitude". Try to talk with Queen if she is available.
If they are not willing to give you an appointment with Dr. Pavlick very soon, then it would pay to see Dr. Ott because I would imagine that he works very closely with Dr. Pavlick….most probably they are working in the same corridor and share notes all of the time.
When I say short period of time, I'm talking about a week.
If you need any more help, info, etc., let me know.

Hi,
I understand your frustration, but to let you know, my melanoma oncologist has a melanoma nurse practitioner who I see alot too…….I get booked for a "clinic" appointment and I see either one, but if I wanted a "specific" appt I can ask, and schedule one…and I have. I feel it is good to have two people, they each check me over , discuss treatment options, etc and know me well, and I feel in extremely capable hands. I have found that the nurse practitioner will get on the phone and talk to me if I am really upset about something that I have called in about, and she is very reassuring and very knowledgeable. Often, in my clinic appts, if I have one, then the other comes in, and many appts I have had both the doc and the nurse pract in with me and my mom, and we have had a 4 way discussion. There is also a nurse assigned to them that I speak with quite regularly and now I have the Ipi trial coordinator, who is not a nurse, but very knowledgeable and she also speaks to my melanoma doc and NP numerous times a day and also emails them with my questions/concerns…so all in all, I feel like my bases are covered.
It may be a good thing to have BOTH doctors on your "TEAM". Good luck, to all of you who go to that facility.

Hi
I have been a patient of Dr. Pavlick for almost 7 years now (actually have a routine Clinical trial follow up this Wed). I cannot say enough about this doctor: she's sharp, kind, honest and very determined. The NYU Cancer Center in general is filled with caring and sharp people. Personally, I have seen and wouldn't mind seeing anyone else that works along side Dr. Pavilick because she is that good.
That being said, you are looking for a 2nd opinion I assume. In that case I would want to see Dr. Pavlick and her alone because this is a critical time for you. I would call back and explain the situation and ask if you could be squeezed into the next available appointment to see her.
Good luck ๐
