I've always heard that if it's suspicious, punch only. So I asked my derm. He's good, too.  He told me he "scoops" them???  And it's not a shave.

        does that sound right?

I have a question that may seem stupid to some. If it was melanoma in-situ…isn't that cancer?  You said it showed no cancer cells. I'm so confused on the staging and line between melanoma in-situ or stage 0 (are they same thing)…and atypical moles and atypical melanocytic hyperplasia.

I have never had melanoma either…but several atypicals and hyperplasias. It has been my experience…that my Derm calls me faster if it's atypical. I didn't understand at first. But he finally explained it to me. And this time…was the worst one I've had…and he called me within 24 hours.

That is scary. I, too, am pregnant and have wondered the exact same thing. Although I have not had a melanoma…I've been check for years with nothing atypical and all of a sudden, during this pregnancy…I've had 4 come back atypical…one bad enough to need a full excision.

my Derm says there is conflicting opinions on if pregnancy hormones actually speed up or trigger melanoma or change in moles.   He did say after seeing what has happened to me he tends to lean more that perhaps the hormones to trigger something.

What stage are you?  I'm so sorry. The great news is that although…yes, it's scary…melanoma is treatable and even curable if you stay on it and catch it early. That's what I'm doing. Every 3 months.

Thank you for your reply!  Could my picking at this mole made it progress toward melanoma?  Also, I'm pregnant…do hormones play a part in melanoma?
