Since deciding to immerse myself in melanoma education, I have been scouring the internet and came across a really good series on treatment options. It’s a panel of the top melanoma doctors in the world giving their opinions on what they prefer. It may be a year or 2 old but still interesting, here’s the link. The channel on YouTube is called Onclive TV so you can search that and add Melanoma in search.

I personally am gathering as much information as possible as to become my own best advocate in the treatment of this monster called melanoma. Let’s face it, this thing is trying to kill us all and we need to explore every avenue, open every door, to fight it. It’s war, myself against this pestilence and I intend to win! Of course the best resource is our doctors but there are going to be decisions that we are going to have to make deciding treatment options, etc. and I want to know all available options and the odds, side effects and durability. I think most doctors also would want their patients to have as much knowledge as possible. Let’s all keep up the fight in this battle and remember having the right attitude and not letting this disease define and victimize us is 1/2 the battle.

      Cheers
      John

You are so right, John!!! Education is power!!! Sadly, though it is improving as targeted therapy and immunotherapy for melanoma patients becomes more common place, there are still far too many local oncs who are woefully unaware of how to provide and manage this treatment as well as deal with side effects appropriately when they occur! Many members of this forum can attest to this sad fact. When you couple that with insurance companies who think they have the right to “manage” our care rather than our oncologists, patient’s rights can go completely out the window. But, when we know the ropes and are well versed in our treatment options as well as worrisome signs and symptoms to watch for, we gain control of our care and can have much more meaningful discussions with our providers leading to improved decisions regarding the treatment plans we need. And, yes! OncLive is an excellent resource! Thanks for sharing.

          yours, celeste

Hi John, here are a couple of ideas to help you in your research. First, you can go to Onclive and actual sign up and follow updates from all the big conferences, here is a link and just sign up no fees and they might send out emails but you can choose to not receive them. https://www.onclive.com/peer-exchange/malignant-melanoma-management/stage-iii-melanoma-adjuvant-therapy-trials Now on the Onclive web page you can follow articles by clicking on left column “specialty topics” just go down to melanoma and click. The video section is down below articles and just click on see “more videos” and it goes back month to month and big conference to big conference. ESMO, ASCO, SITC are some of the big events during the year. When you get into youtube searches a few of the Dr.s to type in would be dr. Jeffrey Weber, Dr. Jason Luke, Dr. Omid Hamid, Dr. Michael Davies, Dr. Tawbi at MD Anderson, Dr. J Long from Australia, Dr. Jeff Wolchok, and Dr. Tony Ribas from UCLA would be a pretty good list to start with. Here is a link to the Angeles clinic where Dr. Omid Hamid works to get you started on a current series, they usual do a series with experts speaking on various topics in melanoma research each year. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbSHUEbhTho
