My son lives in Chicago and has been seeing Dr. Shea at the Univ. of Chicago. He's been very pleased with the care, but somehow because of the way they bill and the fact that his office is in a hospital, his insurance doesn't cover his appts. He asked me if I knew of another derm in Chicago that would be highly recommended, and I told him I would ask here. An added plus would be if it could be someone on the north side (he lives in Logan Square).

Do you want a derm or a melanoma oncologist? Dr. Kaufman at Rush is excellent if you want the latter; so is Dr. Gajewski from the University of Chicago.

Lori,
He doesn't have melanoma, so he just needs a derm. My husband and his sister have both had melanoma, so we've strongly encouraged our kids to have regular derm appts–and glad they've heeded our advice!
Thanks for responding. Hope we won't ever need those doctors, but it's good to have that recommendation!

My son (you can read his profile by clicking the link) sees Dr. Kaufman at Rush, but Dr. K is the head of the oncology department and a melanoma specialist. Dr. Rhodes is the dermatologist my son sees and Dr. Bines in the head of the Skin and Lesion Center at Rush. I cannot say enough about these doctors, especially Dr. Kaufman. My son's care has been excellent – just phenomenal care. I highly recommend them. Good luck to you.
