I'm post stage IIa melanoma about 16 months and I just tonight discovered a pea-sized lump in my neck near my throid. I've been on synthroid for low thyroid for over 20 years. Does anyone have any information about increased risk of thyroid cancer after melanoma? I plan to contact my oncologist tomorrow, but am wondering if there is some kind of connection. Thanks!

I was first diagnosed Stage 3a melanoma … had a PET scan because of the melanoma and my thryroid lit up on the PET scan and the area to the right of my thryroid. I was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer (also in 8 lymph nodes to the right of my thryroid). Both my ENT doctor and melanoma onocologist said that the cancers were not related.

I'm 3b melanoma as of 2013 and then pet picked up papillary thyroid tumor. Mayo used alcohol ablation and basically injected the tumor with alcohol and killed it. The onc joked that the least of my worries is the pap thyroid cancer so why not do the ablation. So I tell everyone that has papillary thyroid cancer-do not let them cut out your thyroid! Use ablation-the thyroid is super important.

Thank you all for the replies. The lump has gotten smaller so it's probably nothing serious and you've relieved my mind about it being related to the melanoma. I did get a chance to have a doctor give it a feel and he agreed at this point it's of no concern. It's so helpful to bring issues here where people understand how any lump, bump, or pimple can feel really scary. Thanks agin!
