I was diagnosed today with subungual melanoma. Started in my finger nail and now recommending that they remove 1/4 of my thumb. Does anyone know of a cancer center in the US that specializes in this type of melanoma? Scary for me…four young sons and have always been healthy

My husband had a partial amputation . Subungal melanoma is rare and really hard to get info on. Read my posts for the whole story. Almost a year since diagnosis now.?he is able to golf, ski, do woodworking . He had 1/2 his thumb removed and really has adapted well. He can tie his shoes. Safety pins are a problem. Keep in touch especially if you find a specialist. I do not know of any. Good luck

My husband said to make sure you massage and use lotion on the amputated area, please keep me posted regarding your treatment . The only definitive study about subungal melanoma was done in Australia in 1991. Less than 1 percent of melanoma patients have subungul melanoma. Some think subungal melanoma is a different disease than most melanoma.!my husband wanted to know if you have had trauma on your thumb. Some docs think there is no relation, but the Australian study found an association.
I feel for you and your family.. My husband has his next scan on September 5. He feels great and we are going backpacking next week up to 12000 feet..
You will get through this. Marianne

Yes there was initial trauma to the thumb. I jammed the thumb on the side of the pool while swimming and buckled the nail so part of the nail seperated from the nailbed. Thank you for the response. Getting amputated next week.

Thank you for responses. Encouraging to hear. Surgery on for me on thursday…thumb removal and biopsy. Initial PET scan did not show any spread. However, still removing and biopsying lymphnodes.

Melanoma moved to the bone and now have spot where spleen and rib located along with lung. If anyone has any experience with this would appreciate any insight on treatment, medications, medical institutions.
thank you,
