      Hello,

For a few days, I have a pain in my knee, which started suddenly at night and doesn't go away. It is not constant but "flashing": hurts for 1-2 sec, then go away for 3-4 sec or more, then comes back etc. I feel it most when standing, sitting, lying down but it is better when walking. I am Stage 1B, 8 years post-diagnosis. I have a herniated disk but never had before such symptoms in the knee. Did someone experienced something similar? Do bone metastases have the same pain pattern? I am scared and will appreciate any help. Thanks.

Because of the "on and  off" nature of this, it could be referred pain from the spinal area – a pinched nerve perhaps.  These things are tricky to diagnose – a scan of the lower spine may shed light..  You should have it checked out, but it doesn't sound like a bone met to me.

          Best wishes,

          Harry

Thank you for the response, Harry. I'll go to see a doctor.
From your profile, I see that you had bone mets. What were your symptoms? Thanks!

I had several bone mets, only 2 of which presented symptoms.  One was on spine near the tail bone, it pressed on a nerve and manifested itself as shooting pains down my right leg (i.e. a referred pain).  The other was in my left clavicle – it grew into the rotator cup area and I was unable to move my arm.

I am happy to report the met on my spine can't even be seen on the scans, and the clavicle met has greatly shrunk and I now have about 80% movement restored.

                Best wishes,

                Harry

I would sincerely doubt it has anything to do with Melanoma.  The knee is so easily damaged.  It could be anything from arthritis to a torn meniscus.  I tore my meniscus just by over extending my leg to prop my foot up on a foot rest.  I'd start with my GP, if I were you.

                            Good Luck,

                            Mary
