Received call on results of MRI today. Actually showed 2 lesions in cheek. According to Doc, Radiologist said it shows benign characteristics. I asked him what he felt and he said given history, it’s a 50/50 chance of being melanoma. He also said it could be lymph node or scar tissue. So not having a definitive…they are going to do surgery to remove & biopsy. Obviously results will dictate next steps. I can’t stop my head from spinning. Think I’m in trouble here.

Hang on until you know for sure.  Did they look at the size of lumpy nodes in the MRI?  Maybe YOU discovered it early enough to prevent further spread.  When will it be removed?  I'm waiting to hear the results TOO!

They’re not even sure it’s a lymph node…just one of possibilities. He said nodule is about 5mm. Just found out surgery is the 17th…23 years to the day I graduated Marine Corp infantry school. Thinking maybe scar tissue? Can I be that lucky?

        Hey Josh,

I agree – wait for the result.  The important thing is you're staying on top of your appointments and follow up.  Hopefully it's nothing.  if that isn't the case, you're giving yourself the best opportunity to address it.  Good luck!

Hang in their Josh.  From one devil dog to another just keep remembering "attack, attack, attack."  It's scary as hell I know but regardless of what the news is from your biopsy you can beat this.  Stay positive.  I'll be praying for good news for you.

Thanks for responses. I just received call from oncologist. Just wanted to confirm what surgeon told me…MRI is not definitive so excisional biopsy as previously mentioned. Need to figure it our but said no SNLB was necessary as this would be a local/regional recurrence and lymph nodes wouldn't really be involved. If lumps come back malignant probably a PET/CT and I would need a radical surgery and facial reconstruction of right cheek. Does this make sense? Either way…plan is to avoid all that. Appreciate everyone's responses and input…I'm clearly not as knowledgable and experienced as many of you are. I appreciate that many of you share.

        Josh,
It’s hard not to worry until we have to, I know I haven’t mastered it yet. One of the few areas on my face that actually looks pretty good is where a graft was done. Take care, Josh, and please keep us posted.

Putting hope in the fact that the radiologist seems to think it is benign – they really do see so many scan results and have a good sense about what things look like. I am sorry you are having to worry about this and will be glad when you have results in your hand. I am thinking they are going to be good ones ๐Ÿ™‚ .

Thank you for responses! I appreciate everyone’s advice & support. I know many of us go through the waiting & anxiety, so to hear words of encouragement. I know this is one step at a time…and I’m hanging on the hope it’s nothing. Only couple of days until surgery…then the wonderful wait for pathology results!
