Read about it on this link.   Also, you may go to a Social Security office in your area to obtain help.  I have heard that Stage 4 cancers are rarely turned down.  http://www.ssa.gov/applyfordisability/

My experience might be a little different. From work I went on short term disability. They also had a long term disability policy that I went on. That life insurance company said I had to apply for social security disability. There was a free company called social security advocates for the disabled they work with. They made it easy so I didn't have to do much just fill out some papers. Never had to go to no office or nothing. Everything was very easy and stress free.

I just googled that but I'm not sure who I dealt with. They all look the same to me. But these are the two phone numbers I have for them. 18008257734 and 7817945162

                      Hope that helps. Good luck.

As you are diagnosed Melanoma stage IV you qualify for fast tracking approval as its on the Soc Sec Admin's Compassionate Allowances list. I used a SS Disab specialist attorney to fill out the documents for me for a 1,000 fee although they also work for a % of the arrearages award. Being on the compassionate allowances list pretty much assured fast approval, two weeks, in my case, and a first check arriving in five or six months after the date claimed as disability start. In my case I didn't file immediately upon learning of my stage four diagnosis but waited until I has some pretty serious brain surgery a year later. The combination of the tumor, removal of tumor and radiation related injuries caused me some significant  problems that made my returning to my occupation impossible. I also retained an attorney who specializes in long term disability insurance company claims filing to handle the applications with the insurance companies I and my employer had taken on me. The attorney was a godsend collecting the needed medical files and filling in my forms and sending. Be very careful if you choose to file for LTD with insurers on your own as the insurers do try to avoid paying on claims even if you have diligently paid premiums in for many years. It's hard to blame them as there are people who do try to take advantage of them and get paid on claims theat aren't valid. Unfortunately it makes it scarier for people who have real issues that prevent a return to work. My attorney handles all contact with the insurers since the rulings in my favor because some on the lower quality insurers will try to trick you into giving them the right to contact your doctors or try to get you to mis word an answer to a survey answer in an effort to deny coverage. The Soc Sec admin is really fair about paying on claims for medical issues on the compassionate allowances list. If you have paid into social security and any privately owned or group LTD policies you deserve to be able to utilize them during your time of need. I pray for a full recovery and a long life and would gladly go back to work and give up my disability income but until then I can still feed my family and help pay my bills. Good luck in working this out and I wish you the best for securing  a full recovery.
