2 days ago was my gamma knife on 2 brain tumours. Although the procedure was 1 hour and 20 minutes, I got through it okay with lots of anxiety meds!
Anyway, I've never had symptoms from the one brain met which was about 2.5 cm – the other 7mm. The radiologist even said this was definately abonormal not to have symptoms, but it's a remarkable thing. Anyway, today, I have some slight pain around the area where my tumour would be and around the spots where the screws were. Would this slight pain be normal in the area of the tumour? Maybe it's doing something right now that it wasn't doing lately, so it feels kind of strange. I don't need pain killers so I'm okay – it's just a weird quick pain. Anybody experience pain or sensations after gamma knife?? The pain comes on the top of my head, but my main tumour is deep down in the brain, so maybe it's pain from the radiation, plus screw holes in my head.
Any ideas, support, etc??
Lisa

Hey Lisa.
I had lot of strange pains after I had my SRS. There was pain where the screws were. The back of my head hurt a lot more than the ones on my forehead. I think that's because my head was resting on those. I don't remember having any sharp pains in my head or anything like that, but I did feel like all of the skin on my head hurt. My skin was super sensitive and it hurt to touch my scalp or wash my hair for a couple of weeks. At the time I thought the steroids they had me on were causing some of that because when I started getting weaned off of those, the skin on my entire body felt bruised.
I would imagine that a little bit of weirdness and pain is normal, but I undersand how it can be scary. If it concerns you too much, give those doctors a call. They'll be able to tell you.
I hope you get to feeling better soon!

Lisa, after having the Gamma Knife on two areas, I still get a sharp pain for a few seconds now & again back where one of the screws attached to my head. I still get small quick headaches like that last a few seconds then go away, I've had those ever since I had original surgery on my brain back in June, and even lately I've been getting more weird feelings all around up there. My dad says it's due to the weather changing and stuff is moving around, or expanding/contracting, etc, and all the stuff that's been done to my brain is not NORMAL stuff, so I'm sure it's normal to feel some weird stuff.
Our tumors were zapped with the same type of crap that kills other people who are exposed to it at nuclear power plants! So, I'm sure it's going to make your head in those areas feel weird.
Now if you get some horrible headaches, or any other side effects, be sure to call someone and tell them, but I think minor aches/pains would be normal?

In both cases for me, my SRS was preceded by craniotomy, so it's hard to separate effects of one from the other.
The 4 screw sites for the Gamma frame took a few weeks to heal completely, especially the rear 2. The frame was attached surgically by my surgeon, so it seems like there might be some tenderness there as those heal up — they cut into the scalp to get a nice secure seating for the frame.
