My husband was recently diagnosed before Thanksgiving with Stage IV Melanoma. We are looking at obtaining another opinion. We live in Kansas City but are willing to travel. I was told that Dr. Keith Flaherty at Boston Mass and Dr. Judd Wolchok at Sloan Kettering are excellent. If you are a patient of theirs, can you please let me know what you think about them? Thanks!

Have you considered Dr. Linette at the Siteman Cancer Center (Washington University School of Medicine) in St. Louis.  I am a patient and recommend him and staff highly.

I go to dr Linette too. He is very knowledgeable. But if you can travel for at least advice I would suggest Wolchok. I have read several of his articles and he has been the speaker at several things. Then yeah dr Linette is the best in this area.

                      Hi Jen,

I am being treated by Dr.  Wolchock and can't recommend him highly enough.  Extremely knowledgable and just as compassionate. He is also involved in the research and development of many new therapies related to Melanima.   In fact, the entire experience at MSKCC, I believe has given me the best opportunity for a full recovery.

                      Good luck!

Can you let me know what Dr. Wolchok's bedside manner is like? Is it hard to get an appointment? I was told they offer many clinical trials at MSKCC.

                          Thanks,

                          Jen

He is very down to earth, positive and encouraging.  My experience has been that he takes time to answer your questions and I feel he truly listens to,your concerns.  I participated in one of the trials which involved dendritic cell therapy

As far as difficulty in getting an appointment, I'm not really sure.  my guess is that its a moving target based on current patient load?

While I can't comment on any of these specific doctors, I would recommend that you have a consultation with all of them if your insurance and schedule permit it.  Book the appointments and visit each on to hear their advice and treatment approach and decide after you've met with all of them which one to continue with.  This is no small matter and its important to work with someone you are comfortable with.  I "interviewed" three specialists and had three different treatment paths recommended to me.  One wanted to do surgery followed by watch and wait.  Another wanted to submit me to a clinical trial he was working on and the third wanted to start me on Ipi and use the existing mets to measure progress.

Best of luck to you and your husband.

Great advice from Dez.  I started my journey at Emory and although they were good and professional, I was not satisfied with the care plan and also thought MSKCC would provide more options and a higher level of expertise.  After my visit to NY I decided I would be treated there.

I don't know Dr Flagerty but can share my experience with Wolchok. I have been treated by Dr Wolchok at MSK in NYC since early summer of 2011. I find the MSK office staff extremely efficient in scheduling appointments which is important for me as I travel in from upstate NY for treatment. Dr Wolchok and his entire staff of fellows, PA's and nurses are top shelf. Caring, articulate and importantly very up to speed on the latest treatments. The MSK web message portal is very effective for messaging and reviewing labs, radiation and consult visit results as well. When I have called his office with a specific treatment question I have always gotten a call back from a knowledgable medical staff member or the doctor. I fell blessed to be under Dr Wolchoks care and feel that my survival to date  is reflective of the skill of the Dr and the MSK team. I am always horrified  when I see the amount of people with cancer in that waiting room but they move people along at the right pace and I feel that I have exactly the right amount of time with the doctor and his staff. Good luck with your care decision and with your treatment success!
