cyst on scalp?

      Hello,

I was dx with stage 1 melanoma in Sept on my right arm.  I have had a lump on my scalp for a good year or two. The PA I see at the derm office says its just a cyst. I feel like she barely looked at it.

I was willing to let it be but since the melanoma dx, I'm thinking I should have it biopsied/removed just in case. Has anyone here had anything similar? Is it possible it could be melanoma?

      Any thoughts would be appreciated.

      Thanks!

My primary tumor, which was also on my scalp, was what my previous doctor had told me was a cyst for 3 years.  Maybe it turned into Melanoma after all that time, I don't know.  If I were worried about something though, I'd make sure someone examined it to my satisfaction.

Certainly not related to your arm melanoma – it's just not going to spread to your head without hitting other areas first.  Unlikely to be another primary since only about 10% have more than one.  However, it could happen.  Cysts on the scalp are not uncommon at all – but if you want it biopsied, then request it.  Melanoma is new to you and it is always hard to get past that fear that everything is cancer.  But the likelihood this is melanoma is small.  Either request a biopsy or at least have the derm look at it and offer a second opinion.  You need to feel comfortable!  (One question I always ask myself – if I hadn't had a melanoma diagnosis, would this lump/bump/lesion bother me???  Because if the answer is no, then it's probably still the right answer even after your diagnosis).

I agree wtih Janner. Definitely have it biopsied. You need the peace of mind. My husband had a maligant melanoma mole and surrounding area removed from his torso 29 years ago. About 10 years ago, he had a lymphoma removed from the back of his head. Two years ago, another growth developed on the back of his head that the derm thought was another lymphoma. It kept growing and was finally removed last fall. Not only was that cyst found to be metastatic melanoma, but two other tumors were found elsewhere. I'm not saying his case is common, but that's how it rolled for us. Insist on a biopsy. ~ Carol

I agree with the others…a biopsy is a good idea.  My melanoma came back as “just a cyst” straight from leg to breast with no sign in between…better safe than sorry (but in all likelihood it will be just fine!)

You do have to remember who is on this site – the minority who have had issues with melanoma.  So while every response is totally valid, it is still unlikely your lesion is melanoma.  Especially given your statement that you've had this lump for 1-2 years.  Having something that long without change or progression to multiple lumps and no other symptoms – again this sounds unlike melanoma.  Get it checked again but keep it in perspective!

Thanks everyone.  Good points from all. I have my first skin check since my diagnosis in 2 weeks. I am going to ask to have it removed. While I know that odds are it is just a cyst & completely benign, I think I need it gone for peace of mind. Finding that peace of mind is very important with a melanoma (or any cancer obviously) diagnosis.
