    Hi

We had mid Oct scans that showed ipi was working – approx 50% decrease in liver disease – yet he is now feeling some consistent pressure on his lower left side again and the most recent scan did not involve his head where he had a tumour behind his eye (on earlier scan) – he is now thinking his eye looks slightly swollen and feel slightly oily.

Thanks for any possible answers – we more have scan in a month

Terra, I feel that more time is needed to evaluate what is happening. I am not sure if
ipi has could have stopped working already, but it seems unlikely. From:
      http://meeting.ascopubs.org/cgi/content/abstract/25/18_suppl/8525 "Preliminary results
suggest that ORs with ipilimumab may be later in onset … and may occur after
progression. This late onset of effect likely reflects the immune-related
mechanism of action of ipilimumab …"

Perhaps it would be wise to discuss your concerns with the oncologist?

It can happen, even if it’s unusual. My husband received ipi from may-July. His 14 week scan showed of the two tumors he had, one was completely gone, and one was dead and half the size. There was one small new tumor. Over the next two months, more tumors grew. Again, his melanoma specialist (who has used ipi a lot), said it was a very unusual reaction. So, his ipi worked immediately, but stopped working before he even finished the treatment.
Also keep in mind that sometimes the tumors seem to grow before they shrink. Maybe that’s all that’s happening? Hang in there and know that the reaction can take 4-6 months to show up. Don’t give up yet.

        Hi Terra,

I'm sure it's possible that ipi might not work down the road, but if your husbands scan was quite successful, I'd have a hard time believing anything would happen for awhile.  On October 31st, my scans showed 50% regression as well as some were gone.  I had 2 old spots that grew a bit, but we're not sure if this is inflammation.  I have another scan on Nov 30th and as much as I'm nervous about a change in success, I just don't believe that to be true.

If you're husband is having pain in his lower left side – isn't this the colon/bowel area and not the liver?  The liver is on the right side I thought.  Maybe your husband is getting side effects from ipi which can last months after last treatment.

If your husband didn't have any new tumours and had success on all of them, that is good news that will likely stay that way for a while. Besides, if something comes back, he can go on ipi again and have a 50% chance of it working.

Keep positive. It's so hard not to think the worst sometime and think that every pain we have is cancer.

Here's hoping the ipi will continue for a long time.
