    Hi all,

Can anyone list for me the various brain radiation techniques?  I've seen the following tossed around on this site:  SRS, WBR, Gamma knife, Cyber Knife (am I missing any)?  Are these all different techniques or are some of them just different names for the same technique?  Thanks in advance for your help!

Cyberknife, Gamma knife  and SRS(stereotactic) are said to be equally good.  Whole brain raidation you want to avoid if you can because of the widespread damage it can do.  Best to see an expert at a teaching/univ based place.

Maggie if you go to youtube and type in " Cancer treatment for Brain Metastasis" a video from UCLA Health will pop up. It is about 40 min long and the Dr. spreaking is a Neurosurgeon named Isaac Yang. The video is from 2014 and is very informative. Second video on youtube again is titled " Radiosurgery for Brain Metastases" it is from Varian medical systems from jun of 2015 and it features dr Eric L Chang. The video is for radiation oncologist so it is pretty deep language wise. A third video again on youtube titled " New Treatment Approaches for Brain Metastasis"  it was published in may  of 2013 by Moffit hospital featuring dr Geoffrey Gibney. Hope this helps!!! Ed

        Maggie,

To add to Ed's list, this video is from MIF.  It's pretty good but it is from 2012 so I'm not sure how much has changed since then.

Thank you so much, Ed, for posting this!  My brother and I are about to watch the first one now as we just have time before his appointment with the radiologist and want to be prepared with as much info as possible beforehand.  I can't thank you enough for sharing this!  You're always very generous with your knowledge on this site.  Thanks so much!

My brother really like that first video, Ed.  Thanks again for recommending.  It helped a lot during our consultation with the radiation oncologist.

We met with the Radiation Oncologist and learned that there are 4 brain mets.  He recommended SRS not WBR (which I was glad to hear).  Specifically using the Novalis system by BrainLab (with ExacTrac).  They're setting up his team now and we should have the schedule soon.  Thank you all so much for your help!  We were very prepared for the meeting and able to ask good questions (and got good answers!)
