Oh, dear! Last week's scans show that my brother's melanoma is progressing on Zelboraf. One tumor in his lung increased from 3 cm to 4 cm since the last scans 2 months ago. Thankfully, no other tumors in his body or his brain are growing yet. He started Zelboraf at the end of July. He had an excellent response and very few side effects but–alas–he's becoming resistant.

His oncologist at the VA would support him going into an anti-PD-1 clinical trial at Moffitt but I don't see Moffitt listed as a site for the GSK Phase 3 trial. Does anyone  know if Moffitt is doing any anti-PD-1 clinical trials?

Sorry to hear the Zel is failing. Use the moffitt website or clinicaltrials.gov to research what trials they have and what the eligibilty requirements are. Then start making phone calls and sending emails until you get a human to find out if they have openings. Good luck!

Thanks, Amy. I did look at those two web sites and I don't see anti-PD-1 listed at Moffitt. I find that hard to believe, so I'm wondering if I should be searching for a differnt key word or something. Anybody have any info about PD-1 or PDL-1 at Moffitt?

POW, following awillett's suggestion, here's some of the anti-PD1 trials listed at Moffitt's web site. Don't know if I missed anywhay. Here's a link to their trials page: http://www.moffitt.org/research–clinical-trials/clinical-trials

        some of Moffitt's anti-PD1 trials:

        Clinical Trial 16907 (Merck's)

        Clinical Trial 16715 (CureTech's)

Clinical Trial 15400 (BMS's, but combined with vaccine so HLA-A*201 typing must match)

Clinical Trial 15651 (BMS's, but also combined and requiring HLA-A*201 typing match)

        Thanks, Kyle. That helps!

I notice that all the trials listed are Phase 1 or pilot studies. Odd that Moffitt isn't involved in any Phase 3 studies of anti-PD-1. I did call the clinical trials coordinator as Amy suggest but, naturally, the coordinator is out of the office today. I guess I'll just have to twist in the wind until Monday.

I'm not sure that any company's anti-PD1 drug has reached phase 3 yet, at least for melanoma. But I think I've read that for the BMS drug, phase 3 is coming "soon" in 2013, skipping right over phase 2 I think. The MIF web site pointed out these two BMS phase 3 trials — but they are not recruiting yet at least according to the (sometimes-out-of-date) .gov web site:

        http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01721772 (BMS-936558 vs. Dacarbazine)

http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01721746 ( BMS-936558 to the Physician's Choice of Either Dacarbazine or Carboplatin and Paclitaxel in Advanced Melanoma Patients That Have Progressed Following Anti-CTLA-4 Therapy)

Oh! You're probably right– anti-PD-1 may not yet be in Phase 3 trials. I've read so much about it here that I just assumed it was in Phase 3, but I guess not. Mystery solved. Thanks, Kyle!

There are several of us on Anti-PD-1 trials at Moffitt and as far as I know we are all doing well.  Probably not everyone but it seems everybody I have conversed with is.  You should be able to get good info on Monday. Good Luck!

I am sorry to hear this, and know how disappointing it is to get that news. Wishing you all the best as you pursue the available options for your brother. I am glad there are options out there… this is something my oncologist reminds us of always…just a few years ago we'd already be completely out of medical options. Keep us posted and know there are lots of people pulling for you guys!
