Was diagnosed last week after biopsy showed .3 mm depth.  WLE tomorrow.  I was told to get an xray of chest and eyes.  Is this fairly common?  From what I've read, it doesn't seem like .3mm would warrant the xrays.  Thanks.

Some places do baseline X-Rays, most don't.  They're not really looking for disease – especially for a .3mm lesion.  Think of it as a baseline and then decide if you want to do it or not.  It's up to you at this point – you call the shots.  No one should really fault you for refusing.  As for the eye exam, it makes sense to have a yearly exam anyway.  It's pretty rare to have ocular melanoma when you have cutaneous melanoma (they are two distinct types), but it certainly can't hurt to have an exam – especially if you haven't had one in the last year or so.  Sorry you had to join us here, but congrats on catching this early!

Thanks, Janner.  I'm not refusing anything, I was more alarmed than anything else after I found out I caught this early.  Thanks again.

Just thought I would pop in today and I saw your post.I used to come here often, no so much anymore.

I also had a .30 mm depth, no ulceration and one mitosis. X-rays and a eye exam were never mentioned to me. A x-ray will not show anything anyway as far as your case goes, but yeah a base line never hurts.

.30 is what is considered a low risk lesion. Be happy you caught it early. Just keep up the derm visits.

Michael-will be 4 years out since diagnosis this September.

I was diagnosed January with 0.2 mm. Just folllow up appointments for 1 year and WLE.

I flyed abroad for holiday and asked Docs in where to make Xray for me .It is normal in some countries ,even with small lessions.

Xray was done ,of course nothing was found. But just for peace of mind ๐Ÿ™‚

My lesion (a year ago) was pretty much exactly the same as yours – 0.3mm.  I had no X-rays – my doctors said they'd do it if I wanted but they recommeded not – 1) won't show microscopic disease anyway – by the time something would show you'd be in with symptoms 2) rate of false positives higher than actually finding something "real"
