Hi there, I’m in the same boat — punch biopsy on small 3mm mole came back with severe cytologic atypia, positive margins, etc. Took a conference of pathologists to diagnose as atypical vs melanoma. Wide excision last week and still waiting for results. Annoying, but better safe than sorry. From reading docs online, it seems only a very small percentage of samples from subsequent excisions ever come back with a higher grade diagnosis than what was found in the initial shave or punch.
