My father had severe side effects after his 3d Yervoy/Opdivo treatment.  He developed colitis, became dehydrated, very weak and confused.  Mom had him in the ER 3 times over a 5 week period.   He's lost a ton of weight, is very weak, and mentally he has moments of confusion that are concerning.

Has anyone experienced the severity of these side effects, including "brain fog" or confusion?  If so, did the patient get better or back to normal?  How long did it take?  We see improvement in his eating and stamina finally…very little but at least it's progress.  However, his confusion and slurred speech are still very concerning.

      Thank you

His oncologist should be notified immediately when any of these major side effects come up. The neurological ones are not typical and his oncologist will likely want to do a brain MRI.

I agree. Sounds like he needs a brain MRI ASAP.

              – Don't move forward with whole brain radiation. Find the best radiation ocologist IF its brain mets and get a second opinion.

Is he being seen by a melanoma specialist?  There is medication you can take to help with appetite.  If you fill in the profile page it may help with some of the questions you ask so we will know what stage, where the cancer is located and even help guide you with Drs. in your area.

I had much the same thing happen to me after my third Yervoy treatment. Finally diagnosed with viral encephalitis. Spent a week in the hospital and am at home recuperating. The really scary part is the awareness and confusion and being able to know what's real and what's not. Good luck to your family,!

Thank you!  The MRI came back negative for brain bleeds or stroke.  We have now been asked to look at Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (since my dad would drag his feet quite a bit…waaaaay before cancer or chemo).  I'll check out the viral encephalitis as well.  His appetite is improving slowly…but at least it's improving.
