Can anyone clarify for me the definition of ulceration?  My mole protruded above the skin and was bleeding.  However, my doc said that it was not ulcerated because ulceration comes from below.  It is 2.58 mm deep with meitotic rate of 3.

Ulceration is ONLY visible at the microscopic level where the epidermis is no longer intact.  Bleeding lesions can happen in ulcerated lesions, but bleeding by itself does not mean a lesion is ulcerated.  Only the pathologist can make this determination.

Whew!  Thank you.  This is so helpful.  I had thought that because my mole was bleeding (and I stupidly kept it covered with a bandaid for months) that it was ulcerated.
