My husband is on day 10 of 15 days of WBR for brain mets. He is stage 4 with several mets to lung, many on abdmonmen, two small ones on liver, and 14 small on brain. He started Yervoy, has done two infusions. No real side effects, worked daily, ate well, no symptoms beside cough, no weight loss.
Since WBR he is a different person. No appetite, lost 20+ lbs in two weeks (even tho he is eating, albeit not as much) exhausted , extremely weak.

It is scary, he was thin to begin with. We saw Onc a week ago and see him again tomorrow after repeat of chest/and CT today due to more coughing to see
what is happening. He is pale, has black bruises not healing, he has just gone down so far so fast. Is it possible its the radiation and he will
bounce back. . PS. Onc started him on zelboraf last tuesday after finding out he is braf positive, but wants to assess tumors, i think to see if he
will go back to Yervoy or not.I know i will find out more tomorrow but I am always curious for other comments from this community
Thanks, Vicki

Vicki, I'm sorry you guys are going through this. Hope he can continue to grit his teeth to get through the last 5 days of radiation treatment. It's obviously a tough situation. Seems like the BRAF+ test result took awhile. Hope that your oncologist and radiation team and the two of you end up on the same page with a plan that seems like the right one to both of you. Good luck with your visit tomorrow.

Are you working with a melanoma specialist? I ask simply because we have always been warned that you can’t have any type if radiation while on Zekboraf. I have heard that WBR is really hard on patients.-

I was just given the OK to have a small course (5 fractions) of radiation for an unresectable lesion behind my eye while at the same time starting off on a BRAF/MEK inhibitor trial (not Zelboraf but another company's version). This is probably a fair bit different in extent to WBR though. I had no problems and the lesion appears to have been successfully zapped thereby saving my sight.

My husband did WBR in November 2011, and his main side effect was fatigue and that didn’t happen until the end of his three weeks! I think it’s unlikely that a 20+ lbs weight loss is due to WBR within a week or two of the start of his brain radiation. Hope you get some answers from his doctors soon! God Bless, Valerie (Phil’s wife) -

Thanks all for your replies. The scans showed no improvement and some advancement so
we are going to continue the Zelboraf and stop Yervoy. We have only 3 more sessions of WBR
I asked the Dr about doing it while on zelboraf – he indicated that because Randall's tumor load
was so high he wanted to start the zelboraf and not wait until WBR finished. He believes the
weight loss is part from radiation -loss of appetite and disease progression. On the upside, he has now been
on Zelboraf for 8 days and a lump in his neck has disappeared and in the last two days he is more energetic
and eating better. Hopefully Z is starting to work? He is on 8 tablets and no other effects – skin or joint problems.
Im cautiously optimistic. Thanks, Vicki
