I was gifted an 11 one-hour series which I procrastinated watching because it promotes a holistic approach, which I assumed does not work. However, I finally relented and am now half-way through and finding much of  it highly credible although there are glaring holes. The jist of it is that our culture promotes a depleted immune system which normally kills cancer cells that occur naturally in every body. They offer natural ways to restore and strengthen your immune system which includes cuddling and singing in addition to diet. Many holistic approaches work in concert with standard procedure. Through this MPIP forum and my own online research, I have come to the same conclusion as many others with Stage III – no current standard of treatment prolongs survival. The best way to get the new Stage IV immunotherapy is to volunteer for a clinical trial. It ultimately comes to a personal decision weighing quality of life against risk. Dependent on my upcoming appointment with melanoma specialist, Dr. Sajeve Thomas, University of Florida, I am currently leaning toward quality of life and doing my utmost to improve my health and optimize my immune system.  This gifted series may help tremendously if I choose this path.

I have had my general oncologist refuse to treat me after I quesioned his assertion that a CLND (complete lymph node dissection) definitely improves survival. I also questioned his demands, not recommendations, for chemo, interferon, and radiation. He demanded that I stop reading.  At the May 29-30 American Society of Clinical Oncolgy, the results of the latest study showed no survival benefit for CLND and that it may become a thing of the past.  It is glaringly apparent that all his demands do not improve survival. It appears that most oncologists, like him,  will continue to adamantly advocate treatments that do not improve survival and that you will receive strong flak for even questioning – after all, at Stage III, they have nothing to offer from their revered chart on standard procedure.

Is anyone out there solely following a holistic approach at Stage III?

I would change the title from " The Truth about Cancer " to " I am a snake oil salesman" . I could only take about 25 min of the quacks who were being interviewed before I turned it off. Find a good Melanoma specialist is my advice to you!!!

I am new to all this and appreciate your feedback, but so far the best examples of "snake oil salesmen" I have found are in the ranks of ocologists who adhere to NCCN standard treatments, and who are still performing CLND, chemo, and interferon when current studies demonstrate that they do not improve survival. It appears to me that NCCN is not proof of a treatment's effectiveness, but license to do it.

A lot of things they say can improve your immune system like no stress, being happy, exercise, nutrition and things. But dealing with this nightmare disease that isn't enough unless maybe if you are NED and had the immune system build up for long term NED.

It is scary to try and do the Yervoy vs pd1 trial for stage 3 folks. There can be some severe side affects granted most I've read are from the higher doses in the earlier trials but there is still a risk. Especially yervoy with the pituitary gland and colitis granted pd1 can as well but not as common. For me I've done both. Side affects were very minor but yervoy did not help. Pd1 has helped some or I wouldn't be here.

You've already had a decent amount of years so up to you of course. You are absolutely right about the clnd apparently and interferon. But when it comes to yervoy and pd1 at least they have a decent chance. I think the most detailed results I've seen though for the fda dose is only 15 and 25 % respectively. Granted you will see higher numbers but those include the trial numbers at various doses and frequency. So not that great but it is the best the medical field has so far that I know of for stage 3. Much better than last year for stage 3. Granted those are responders which is calculated by recist. Technically I'm a non responder to pd1 but it has slowed it down and given me over a year that I wouldn't have had otherwise. Granted having to get an iv every 3 weeks and well now every 2 weeks since I'm on the other pd1 is a pain.

i don't remember if you are NED at stage 3 or not but I know others on here that are that took the wait and see approach. The key to thst I think is NED or not. Granted NED still has some cancer cells just too few to detect.

Your choice. You gotta go with your gut. I know what I would try to do but Thsts just me.

                            Good luck.

                                Hey Artie!

Great to hear from you again.  Thanks.

My PET scan and brain MRI were negative – does that mean I am NED? For my Stage IIIb, I found a chart whose stats put the chance of survival for at least 5 years at 49%. The chance of recurrence within 5 years is 80%. Of course individuals vary and current progress will make these stats better – perhaps a lot better.

I could find no clinical studies on nutrition's or lifestyle's effect on cancer. The biggest thing that I have control over is what I can do myself for my body. Getting myself in better health and optimizing my immune system is a fantastic idea even if one of its advocates is a snake oil salesman.  I have been forced into a deadly game of craps.  I will enhance chance and load the dice when I have the opportunity.

My health plan does not take Dr. Weber at Moffitt but that will change at open season. In the meantime I hope all my questions will be answered June 19 with my new doctor, a melanoma specialist at UF. But I am not counting on it.

NED at Stage IIIb and with limited options, my gut feeling right now is to go crabbing on the Alafia River with a good friend and sing.

                                Thanks.

That's great you are NED. Yes that's what those scan results mean. So yes have fun on the river and enjoy. Thst is great for the immune system.

Ther is a lot of nutrition that can be done to help. Basically less processed foods. Making your own smoothies and things like that. There is a website that someone posted on here that md anderson recommends. It's free recipes on basically a healthy diet. Very similar to what I was already doing since I got this disease so I didn't bother with it. Before this disease my diet was pretty bad. Lots of TV dinners and about a liter of soda a day. I haven't had either since then.

I follow a completely holistic approach and i am stage 3b.

I dont however rule out using mainstream remedies as you need to keep an open mind.

I do value quality of life over everything so I will only do toxic treatments as a last resort.

Contact one of the German or Mexican cancer clinics if you want to go down that path.

If you try and do it yourself you will have no chance of success.

Also doing alternate is expensive and demands high discipline so it is not for everyone and just with mainstream treatments there is no guarantee of succeess.

Also doing alternate is expensive and demands high discipline so it is not for everyone and just with mainstream treatments there is no guarantee of succeess.

My cousin recommended that website and series to me.  It is very expensive-I think around 500 to get the books.  I did some research on the guy and he has been to prison for fraud-that's right-scams-he is good at one thing-transferring your money into his pocket.  We all do desperate things when we get the diagnosis-but please don't fall for this predator.

I follow a completely holistic approach and i am stage 3b.

I dont however rule out using mainstream remedies as you need to keep an open mind.

I do value quality of life over everything so I will only do toxic treatments as a last resort.

I actually watched the series unlike others here and there was a young pro golfer on it who had stage 4 melanoma who used alternative methods to gef to NED status.

Maybe you could investigate who he worked with and what he did.

There was also a couple of mainstream doctors interviewed who used alternative medicine to put their cancers in remission so I wouldnt  be as dismissive as others here who have posted.

There are other cures out there. To give you an example there is an off label drug called cimitidene aka trade name tagamet which is a cheap over the counter med for stomach problems and is a histamine blocker that has put soem stage 4 patients into complete remission but there wont be any trials on it as it there is no money in it.

Another interesting thing i found out for stage 3 people is that anti coagulants are a good protection to keep the disease local and stop it from spreading to a stage 4 disease. These are cheap inexpensive drugs that might work but you wont get anybody prescribing them to you because there is no money in it..

I initially had surgery in 2012 for one lung tumor that was misdiagnosed.  After a recurrence in January 2014 and a lung needle biopsy in March confirming melanoma, I sought to "get healthy" before starting treatment.  While researching "getting healthy" I ran into a lot of alternative treatment information and survivor stories that peaked my interest.  I worked on my own at getting healthy by following a clean paleo diet and taking supplements (with the help of a naturopath) and growth of my tumors stalled for 9 months (I was also losing weight which may have caused the stall).  But after that, the tumors started growing more quickly and a new tumor was spotted (all still in lungs) in January 2015.  So I decided I needed to change it up and either start conventional treatment or double-down on the alternative treatment.  I decided to double-down on alternative and started following the protocol of Dr. Nicholas Gonzales in March of this year (he's one of the doctors interviewed in Quest for the Cures Continues).  Couldn't say for sure if its working for me or not so far.  Hope so.  Don't know.  Still feel good but I haven't had scans since starting so won't know for sure until I do.  I'm hoping I can at least stall until Keytruda/Opdivo are approved as a first-line treatment.

I am still stage 3 getting on to two years after initial dismal diagnosis of an 7mm amelanotic melanoma that i carried around for 18 months!
