    Both aspects to immunotherapy…..side effects and how they impact response….especially if treated with immunosuppressive drugs (prednisone, etc.)…are central to many of the questions I am sent by melanoma peeps and their families.  Today, I put up this post that covers a lot of ground…but begins to pick out the answers:

    I have done my best to decipher the data accurately and concisely.  But more importantly, as I conclude in the piece:

    YES!!!  You CAN and SHOULD treat side effects to immunotherapy with prednisone if needed.

      Celeste – For the non-med people like me, can you please explain what the difference is between the overall response rate and the "objective" response rate (shaped by WHO criteria). Thanks!!

        There's a lot of fluidity in the terms researchers are using these days….so it is hard to pin down exactly what is meant in a global way.  Instead, you have to look at the particular paper in question to see how the researchers define their terms…sometimes it is in the body of the text, sometimes in the footnotes.  This is unfortunate as it makes it hard to compare apples to apples from one study to another.  

        However, generally speaking an overall response MAY include ANY response whatsoever…. anything from a partial to a complete respsonse and sometimes even stable disease. It varies. Objective response usually means those that are defined by RESIST1.1 definitions.  Immunologic response often includes an even broader spectrum of results.

        Hope this helps. However, I don't think these definitions are essential in regard to the main points presented in these particular reports.  Yours, celeste
