I've been referred to a palliative specialist despite having a fairly low disease burden. I have pain in one area where I had surgery, but otherwise have had very few problems with treatment. Is this a common occurrence? How many people have had this happen to them?

Being in pain, whether tumor burden is high or low, should be managed well and palliative specialists are best when it comes to managing pain. They are also good for support outside of your regular doctor and family.

We've met with palliative care several times over the past 5 years to address a variety of pain issues and have found the team very helpful. I was initially hesitant to schedule the appointment but was very pleased with the amount of time spent going over a variety of possible treatments – everything from massage therapy, physical therapy and evaluating a number of pain medications, including medical marijuana as options. I would highly recommend that you schedule an appointment.

Hi,
Palliative work- to reduce pain- is being renamed in many places due to association with pain linked to terminal disease – but this is not necessarily the case and the early input of palliative teams has been shown to decrease pain levels and reduce useage of drugs.
I''m now in the care of a palliative team the lead consultant being gentle, kind and a careful listener looking at the interaction between different products and wish I had been under his care earlier.
Good Luck
