Sadly this was proven in "small animals" not human research yet.

Clearly, my anonymous friend!!! However, if you read further there are real live PEOPLE who have proven the synergy exhibited between radiation and ipi and real life folks like ARTIE and MANY OTHERS are proving it day by day…for the benefit of all of us. We are blessed to learn from them. C

You go Artie! You have shown your bravery here and shared your honest feelings. Everyone needs to be feeling good at all this research going on for melanoma. But also beware that lots of it is not proven in people yet and they hype it in the press. I know I wish I were a mouse sometimes so these discoveries would help me!!

You go Artie! You have shown your bravery here and shared your honest feelings. Everyone needs to be feeling good at all this research going on for melanoma. But also beware that lots of it is not proven in people yet and they hype it in the press. I know I wish I were a mouse sometimes so these discoveries would help me!!

Yes, Cooper. Press is one thing – but data from research is another. Like anonymous…hmmm…wonder who that was!!!!…said…this study was in "small animals"! Yep! Sure was. I noted it in my synopsis!!!…not to mention the phrase about big and small ratties! However, as I replied…another article I noted showed real data with REAL PEOPLE….demonstrating the synergy between radiation and ipi. Ipi and anti-PD1 are both immunotherapies. This is not the first study or article by MELANOMA EXPERTS who note that a synergy between radiation and immunotherapies…NOT just ipi, even the BRAFi…have been reported by many. So far it is anecdotal data in many cases….and from the experiences of patients like Artie and many others on this forum who, because of their circumstances and conditions, had to embark on radiation in conjunction with the immunotherapy or BRAFi they were already on, have proven, for science and the rest of us…that radiation and systemic therapies can be a good combination with which to fight melanoma. Obviously, more work remains to be done…but from one rattie…to all the rest of the melanoma patients out there….we're working on it! Glad that you, like Artie, were "brave" enough to share your "honest feelings"!! Hope you have a great holiday!!! Celeste

Yup, but my doc says it isn't a done deal yet until there is more than these small studies, the first one had like 3 patients. Anecdotal doesn't work for my doc. So we aren't doing the drug and the radiation at the same time. Feels it could be risky with side effects.

Agreed, these studies on your blog showed in 2013, in each, just five patients and a small percentage of them showing the abscopal effect. So nothing convincing Celeste my friend to get excited about yet. The most recent one was preclinical, meaning not done on humans yet.

Hi all,
Just as an update from my side. My wife has had 2 infusions of Keytruda so far, next one planned for next week. Early signs are that it may be worked as her LDH levels dropped from 1300 to 600 after the first IV.
But she's been having strong pain in her bones after her previous meds failed and 3 tumors arose around her hip/lower back/pelvis (before only in her liver & spleen). We got in touch with our oncologist and then a radiologist and they proposed targeted radiation using tomography.
It will be 3 cycles of 5 days of radiation. Primary objective is to alleviate the pain and avoid bone cracks (although there was no immediate concern), but we also hope it will shrink the tumors and ideally benefit the PD1. Our hospital is one of two in Belgium currently taking part in a study to prove this effect between Keytruda and radiation. It clearly early days but the radiologist hinted that in the near future maybe all patients on immunotheraphy will receive radiation to stimulate the process.
