PET Scans & Listening to Music

It was my first one and I was prepared with my portable CD player and a book. However, the technicians wouldn't even let me listen to music during the resting time before the scan, or read a book. I was told that either one of these would make my brain work too hard.

I figurred I couldn't listen while in the machine. Someone here mentioned they could listen to music. I guess there's variations about instructions or maybe it has to do with the type of PET machine?

Every place has their own rules and some are more strict than others. When I'm waiting… which I'll be doing tomorrow.. I go on my phone, read magazines which are provided in the PET/CT waiting room. During the scan I've never tried to bring any music in, they don't like any kind of metal on my clothing, not sure if bringing in a metal listening device would be ok or not, but I've never asked. I didn't like the experience of doing absolutely nothing during the waiting period at the first place I had a PET, so I'm really glad where I go now they're more lenient and aren't all crazy about what I can and cannot do.

I've been pretty exhausted lately, so I'm planning on taking a nap during the scan tomorrow anyway ๐Ÿ™‚

Glad to hear some places are more lenient on the rules. I didn't like doing nothing while waiting for the scan either. I felt like I was in a "time out" room, was anxious with nothing to take my mind off the upcoming scan.

Jennicorn, good luck with your scan tomorrow.

Hmmm…the reason for not letting you read is that you are creating muscle activity (turning pages) which could effect the distribution of the isotopes.  But not listening to music seems a bit unreal (especially since a PET scan does not really even look for brain METs…that is why you do the MRI separately).

I have been to two different locations and both of them were OK with music in the resting room and the actual scan itself (that has to be a bit louder since the machine is pretty loud itself).

I guess another tip for PET scan is to go completely without metal for things like buttons or zippers.  I actually just wear sweats and it works out just fine.

So with regards to the music, I would ask again or if you are in a large metro area…just switch to a different location.  Here in Dallas…there are tons of options…so I guess being a bit more patient friendly pays the bills.

                      Best wishes

The place I go to is pretty lenient, I usually just mess around on my phone.

I’ve never tried to bring music into the scan…I usually fall asleep within the first minute of the scan lol
