      I had a PET scan yeterday and a brain MRI. MRI was clean but the pet scan showed something in my colon. I already had a GI doctor so oncology refered me to him. Of course my mind is in panic mode right now. I like to call them my melanoma moments when I panic about things. I was wondering if anyone knows by the pet scans can they tell if it is melanoma in my colon or could this be a completly seprate issue? When the cancer center called today it was a nurse, not my doctor and the information she was willing to give me was limited. Thanks

          I am sorry to hear this…Try to call back & get a copy of the PET Scan results.. That might have better info as far as what the SUV was etc. Good luck to you!

                Steph makes a good point as well as Teochasse…what is SUV. Have you had GI issues? I hope you get answers sooner than later…I know the melanoma moments and sympathize…it's horrible. All the best!

                      PET scans show metabolic uptake.  High SUV is indicative of cancer, but not conclusive.  Trauma, surgery, arthritis and just weird anatomy can also show uptake.  PET scans do have a higher false positive rate than any of the other types of scans.  Not good for brain because guess what, you have metabolic activity there.  Definitely should be checked out, but don't jump to conclusions!

                            Agree with Janner.  And I have a friend whose PET CT lit up in the colon area.  She had a colonoscopy and it turned out to be a false alarm.  So you just never know.  She says she has mixed feelings about PET CT for just that reason – twice it has been a false alarm.  Other times it has also identified melanoma.  So good and bad.  I wouldn't panic, just get it checked.

                                  Thanks for your input. I am waiting to hear back from the GI doctor. I just met this oncologist last week, my former doctor, who was great, passed away suddenly due to a heart problem. His unfortunate passing really effected me and many of his cancer patients.
