    I am in terrible pain.

I have a met in my spine which is pushing on a nerve.

I have tried oxycodone and trammadol without success.

The doctor mentioned lyrica as another option.

The pain is excruciating running down my hip and leg.

    I bascially cant do anything.

    Any suggestions?

Get an appointment with a pain specialist!  If you aren't getting enough help from your onc, work with someone who knows pain and the best drugs to manage it.

While being treated for my mel, I was given a low-dose of Prednisone (only 10mg per/day) to head off potential side effects.  Unrelated to the cancer, I was really suffering from very painful degenerated discs (confirmed in MRI) in my back that was near crippling.  The Prednisone worked like magic, my back pain disappeared, and now a year later after being off the steroid, the pain has never really returned.  Its likely inflammation is the cause of the pain you are experiencing as the tumor pushes against and squeezes nerve endings.  Its a bit of an off the wall response, but it was my experience.

My husband is going through exact same thing. One oh his Mets are on the kidney pushing on a nerve. Was taking 3200 mg advil a day and worked well….was told to stop taking because of possible kidney and stomach issues. Been on oxycodone and not touching pain. switched him to oxyxontin as it is time released. Didn’t help much more. Today oncologist told him he could take 2400 mg advil a day with oxy. It has worked wonders today. You would have to talk to your doc however. Prayers to you. It is so hard for me to watch him suffer with the pain.

I was wondering whether an oral steroid or cortisone injection would work.

Basically all the usual pain killing drugs do nothing.

I am okay for pain if i dont do anything ie sitting down or lying down i am okay.

As soon as I get up and walk to bathroom or kitchen the pain starts and i have to sit down pretty quickly and wait til the pain subsides.

I cant go anywhere or do anything at the moment so I am pretty desperate to seek out solutions.

This pesky met on the spine is right in the nerve area. I wonder if there are any other treatment options and whether radiation might be possible there. I dont know but i need to find out this week.

OK……..here goes for what it is worth.  My husband broke his back, shoulders, leg, ribs….etc 11 years ago in a horrific accident.  He was on oxycontin for too long, and too much and got horribly addicted…….He as diagnosed with stage 4 mel in May 2015 and the BRAF combo made all of his joints scream with pain. Becasue he had a history of over use of oxy, no narcotics were prescribed., on something called suboxone….just be in pain, and oh by the way – deal with  cancer now too!

a 75 year old friend suggested medical marijuana – we live in California.  Edibles, not smoking.  An oil that he puts under his tounge…..it has changed his pain profile.  His onc was thrilled that Charles found a way to handle his unrelated cancer pain – although it was related because the meds were making it even worse. For what it is worth, it is helping him.  We are conservative people, but I am happy to go to the dispensory with him and help him feel better…….

Again, take it for what it is worth – my heart goes out to you.

I agree with Rita.  Pain is awful to live with and if medical marijuana helps, so be it.  Let us know if you find something that works.  Best of luck to you.

Sorry to hear your story – I hope the medical marijuana solution might work for you – I know I'm hoping it will be approved in Australia when my time comes. Meanwhile, I've had lots of nerve pain from two operations to remove lung mets (I'm stage iv) and my thoracic surgeon prescribed Lyrica – I found it to be an okay pain reliever but it knocked me around for a couple of days so had to leave it off. It's worth trying though, as we're all different. I also got a Tens machine – gives light pulses of electricity and I use that on my scars from having my kidney, spleen and other spare bits removed – it's worth a try too. I'm hopeful you can find an answer.

Well the doctor here has put me on 8mg of dexy something which is a steroid and some synthetic morphine.

It really is only a temporary fix and it sort of works so that i can get around but not really like a normal person.

I couldnt walk really far or do too much.

Doctor wants to get the opinions of surgeon and radiologist speciialist to see what is the best path to deal with the met ie surgery or radiation.

Well still no relief. Running out of pain options now. Ended up trying the medical pot. Made me feel good and relaxed but didnt really relieve the pain.

Been on steriods and morphine for a couple of days and that doesnt work either. Going for another MRI today to check where the issue is coming from and what can be done.

I am losing muscle and weight as a result.

         Not good.

Take care, let us kow how you do.  Is there a chance that you could give up your anonymous profile to be able to share more of what you are going through?  It helps follow a person's journey, if we can connect as a community.  I am always desperate to know when people were diagnosed, what they did – how my husband's case is different or similar.  Just a thought if you built a profile, we and be more supportive.
