Has anyone here been on an oral pill for treatment?

In the last 5 years, my husband’s been through two rounds of Opdivo which were both successful, but in both cases, the cancer did show it’s ugly face again about a year after treatment ended. His Dr. is suggesting he try a pill in combination with Opdivo for treatment this time. We don’t know what the pill is called or if there are different ones. His previous Dr. mentioned it before too, and always referred to it just as “the pill”. However, he wanted to hold off because there has been studies that show that once you have taken “the pill” if you later go back to immunotherapy, it’s less effective. I just want to find out more about it and if anyone here has had good results.
      Thank you.

So sorry for what you and your husband have been through and now face. I cannot be certain what your doc is referring to as “the pill”. (I would call his office nurse and ask for the exact name of the medication being considered.)

In melanoma world, meds in pill form most often refer to targeted therapy – which is a combination of a BRAF inhibitor and MEK inhibitor administered orally. There are several different combinations of those available.

Here is a primer that I put together about melanoma treatments that you may find helpful: primer

Here is a link with many articles about targeted therapy: A zillion articles on targeted therapy

Here is another list of articles and posts about BRAF/MEK therapies:BRAF inhibitors As you will see from the articles, targeted and immunotherapy have been combined in melanoma patients. Sometimes the combo of all of it can make for difficult side effects.

However, I am just guessing as to the drug. Cabozantinib is being combined with opdivo to treat some cancers. Here is a bit of info on it: Cabometyx

Still, my biggest recommendation is to find out the specific drug the doc is considering. You can’t really make a decision without knowing that. Further, I would make certain that your husband is seeing a melanoma specialist. Or at the least an oncologist who is very familiar with melanoma patients who have progressed on prior therapies. This can make all the difference in outcome. Even if you do feel comfortable with your doc’s abilities, a second opinion regarding where to go from here never hurts.

I wish you my best. Celeste
