Hi everyone, I'm Vania's daughter. We're from Brazil, so, I'm really sorry for my bad english.
My mom had a mole in the right leg since ever, and noticed that it changed a little, it got a little bigger and darker. So she went to the dermatologist, that looked and said that it should be taked off, for a biopsy. The biopsy took 3 weeks to be ready, and we got very nervous about it. So, when the result came, it showed that it was a stage IV melanoma. The doctor said that she should pass for a surgery that would take off more tissue from around the mole, and have a biopsy of de sentinela limph. The biopsy came positive, so the doctor recommended another surgery, to take the other limph…
She also had a petscan, that was clean, and I thank God for it!
We are waiting for the results of this surgery, and we're very nervous.
I'm researching a lot about this disease and I found this website, that It's like a blessing, cause I saw many people that had a stage IV melanoma and lived for a lot o years.
When I researched about the life expectation, I got in panic…
I hope I have good news about the next results…
Thank you for your atenttion.

I am just, all the time, asking myself how much time do I have until some methastase will appear…
I'm always nervous, in panic, sad… =(
And I am a vet student, so I understand these things about cancer better than my mom, and I'm with everything in my mind and cant tell her anything..

Hi Camila, sorry to hear about your mothers diagnosis. However, if I am understanding you correctly, your mother had another surgery to remove her lymph nodes? I assume this was taken from her groin area?
It was great news that her scans showed no other area of disease. If this is the case, sometimes she can just have the melanoma removed surgically. Sometimes you will never need any treatments after having the surgery. In my experiences, it sounds like your mother is probably stage 2 or 3, not stage 4. If you can find a melanoma specialist that would help you and your mother to help your next decisions.
There are many other treatments on the market now for advanced melanoma, but I don't think your mother is not that advanced yet.
Best if luck,
Shane

Hi Shane,
thank you very much for answering this fast! I am really apreacceanting this forum, it is so good to read and talk with people that have the same problema, and also, it is good to see that the treatment that they use here in Brazil is similar or the same that they use there.
Now that I read about the diferent types of melanoma in this website, I think I am a little confused, because on her biopsy result, it written 'Level IV on Clark'

She had the inguinal limph nodes removed, because the melanoma was in her leg, right next to the foot (I dont know how to say the area in english) And the sentinela was positive for methastase.

Hi Camila – I'm so sorry for what your family is going through right now. A biopsy cannot stage melanoma so I think your mom might have a Clark's level IV – which is about depth of the lesion that was removed – Stage IV is about spread to other parts of the body. Two very different things.
I found a discussion on this topic here http://www.melanoma.org/find-support/patient-community/mpip-melanoma-patients-information-page/breslow-versus-clarks.
Good luck and please keep us posted.

Thank you for answering! Yes, we do have interferon. My mom's oncologist said that she can chose to use or no to use interferon in her case.
But I am doing researches, and apparently the interferon brings more band things than prevention…
Have you been using interferon?
