The 172.9 simply means melanoma of the skin, site unspecified.  It gives no indication of whether or not it is in situ or superficial spreading.  This could be a very easy problem to fix.  Don't let your imagination carry you away; get a full copy of your pathology report and go from there.

Your oncologist will be able to translate and interpret everything for you, as well as discuss treatment options.  If I were you, I would ask for copies of all your records, including pathological reports, even though you might not understand them.  Then you will be able to research, ask questions, and approach this disease more intelligently.

Gee I'm pretty amazed you can view results online – great in one way, but a bit difficult in another as a diagnosis of something like MM can mean anything from a bit of local surgery (wide level excision – which is most likely) through to full long-term oncology scenario. Given that you don't know where you sit on this spectrum yet, I'd just sit tight and wait for more info. Waiting is hard, but hte main shock – the MM – is already here so perhaps just work on preparing questions for your dr appointment.
