His last day was 12/31. We spoke with him a week ago and asked for recommendations based on the letter he sent. We will continue to stay in touch with him and consult with him as he is an excellent doctor and I don't know where we would be without him. I had heard he is going to Rutgers, but need further confirmation.
We will be transferring over to either Dr. Joe Clark at Loyola or Dr. Jon Richards at Lutheran General.
Anyone out there have any experience with these doctors?

I know – I was in disbelief for a few days until my husband spoke with him. Thought I was losing my lifeline!Traveling to see him is definitely not out of the question.

Richards is good…Northwestern (Kuzel) is good too but he doesn't specialize in melanoma. I like them all… Though never saw Gajewski at U of C. Wonder why someone wouldn't recommend Richards. Kaufman told me he was one of the best around…

We are thinking we will start with Richards…..Dr. Kaufman said we could consult with him and it might make this process easier if we are dealing with someone he already knows & trusts. They can discuss test results & next steps…..if it should come to that. Hoping not, but gotta be prepared for anything.
Also would like to know the negatives re: Richards.
Thanks for your input.

I think big difference is university health care vs private practice. He is on top of latest research & trials and has connections with other melanoma specialists around country. My negative with him is with scans… He isn't as aggressive but you can talk to him about it…he listens.

Go with Jon Richards he is an amazing man and Dr. I cannot say enough about how knowledgeable he is on all things Melanoma… He will do everything he can to not only help you, but be a support as you are fighting this awful battle…. I do not want to think where my husband would be without the expertise of Dr. Richards…

Thanks for the link. I did see this when I was doing research on Dr. Richards. I just haven't had time to sit down and read it. I will do so before making a decision.

I have not. I have been doing more research and wrote to another member on this based on the fact that they also see Dr. Kaufman. I have made an appt for our 3 month CT and results review with Dr. Bines out of Rush. He did my husbands lymph node dissection back in 2011. If the scan comes back clean, my husband will be Stage 4 NED for 1 year! So far, the only place the melanoma has traveled is 1 nodule on the lung, which was removed in March 2013. I hope we stay NED for a long time.
Thank you very much for the information above. Definitely organizations I did not know about.
