I've arranged for all my records to be sent to the melanoma team at Emory. Thanks for the advise everyone on using a melanoma specialist. I hope I've selected a good one. Today I am somewhat calmer, but still very scared.

I've been reading all the stories that get posted here and am very moved. My heart goes out to everyone fighting this disease. I will share whatever bits of wisdom I manage to pick during my struggle. I hope and pray that new medical breakthroughs continue to be made.

      Steve,

I see you live in Roswell. I'm down the road on 85 in SC  exit 19.  I go to Charlotte for my Doctors.  I do know that there are others on the board from your area.  One is Sue Kysar.  She was at Emory for awhile and then went on to MD Anderson.  Sue isn't on the board often but if you would like me to e-mail her to contact you I'd be glad to.  There are some others from the area also but for the moment their names have slipped by me.

      Steve,

Please let us know how it goes at Emory.  I live in Wetumpka AL, and the nearest melanoma treatment centers are UAB in Birmingham, AL and Emory there in Atlanta.  Neither location is mentioned much on this board, so I'm very curious to hear about your experiences there.

And since no one has mentioned it yet, I will – please take a few minutes and complete your profile.  It just lets everyone know a little bit about your melanoma journey without you having to repeat your story everytime you post.  There are several people on this board who have educated themselves very well about melanoma and are very willing to take the time to answer anyone's questions, however, I've noticed one of the first things they usually ask i for you to please complete your profile so they can better assist you! smiley

Welcome to the last place anyone wants to be. Good luck in your journey to the place we all want to reach – NED!

      Hi Steve,

I was once posted on MPIP for many years.  i come here on occassion.  I just came here tonight and saw your post.  I was at Emory for a symposioum years ago where Dr. Larson spoke and I met Jim who was very involved with patients and issues they faced.  I am not even sure they are still a part of the team. I have to say they werer amazing and so caring and knowledgeable on everyting going on with pattient care  and current treatments. I think you will find Emory you bew on the cutting edge of all treat, emts for Melanoma.  If there is any way I may be of help please e mail me at MelanomaHelp@aol.com

      hang tough.

Thank you Linda, Chris and Carol. I will be setting up my profile as soon as I have copies of my reports. Dr. Lawson at Emory is going to be my new doctor. I'm glad to hear that you had a good impression of him, Carol.

I'm making some progress getting my fears under control. When I read the stories of so many on this board, I feel guilty about being so scared. I hope and pray for good results for all of us.

Don't feel guilty about your fears!  As time goes on it's amazing how much easier it is to live with this disease, but the fears still come and go.

My first night that I learned that melanoma had recurred after 27 years I was on this board. At the time getting into chat wasn't so easy and there wasn't facebook ect.  I found Walter who had the same Dr that I had.  All night long we e-mailed back and forth. Somewhere around 3am I realized that he had to go to work the next day.  I don't know if I could have gotten thru the night without him there to calm my fears.  He still pops in now and then and we do keep in contact by e-mail.  There are many out there that have been fighting this for a long time, they just move on and stop in now and then.

Give yourself a few months and you will feel much stronger.

      StevenK,

I hope you are doing well and would like an update on your heath.

I was recently diagnosed with a .6mm melanoma on my hand (but with ulceration) and will be going in for surgery Friday for a Sentinel Node Biopsy and WLE.  I am also in Atlanta.  Anything I should ask the doctors before the surgery?  I have done lots of research, but just want to make sure I have covered everything.

      Thank you!

      Steve,

My wife has been a patient at Winship under Dr. Lawson’s care for almost a year. He and his team are like family to us by now. If you are stage 3 you may have a different doctor (surgeon), but I think he handles all the stage IV ones. He is a recognized leading expert in melanoma as well as a very kind and compassionate doctor. Emory has a multi-disciplinary melanoma team that can help with all aspects of diagnostics, treatment, etc. My wife has done IL-2, Ipi, and radiation at Emory. You are in very good hands there. We are currently going to Vanderbilt while doing a PD-1 trial, but let me know if you have any questions I can help with regarding Emory and our experiences.

      Take care,
      Steve
