Hi Folks from Alberta ,
Can you describe which are some of the best melanoma specialists in Alberta ? My mom is stage 4 and currently treated at the UCSF in USA. Basically she is living with me for the past year and a half since her diagnosis and I have been taking care of her with a full time job and two kids and not to mention that my husband is not very cooperative and doesnt like my parents to be living with us so we are thinking of moving her to Canada to be with my brother. My heart breaks to say this but my relationship with my husband is getting worse everyday due to their stay with us and stressing me out.
to cut it out what are the treat options available for stage 4 patients in Alberta and where are those available.thank you so much !

I don’t live in Alberta but when I was diagnosed last fall I made an inquiry to the Melanoma Network of Canada to find names of melanoma specialists in MB, SK and AB in case I wanted a second opinion now or in the future. Edmonton, Cross Cancer Centre, and Dr. Smylie or Dr. Walker were highly recommended. I have not pursued seeing them at this stage so I can’t comment on their services but maybe someone else on the Board has personal experience and can.I understand the strain caregiving of a parent can be on a relationship, been there done that. We all need a break from the stress sometimes! Wishing you and your family all the best in this journey.

I’m from Alberta. My friend go to the Cross Cancer and his primary oncologist is Dr.Smylie. We also see Dr.Walker about 1/3 of our visits when Smylie is away.
They have very different bedside manner, but both are incredible.
We are currently in a transition in our government, and with that came health care cuts, and yes, it has already directly effected the cross.
Most recently our scans were all delayed because they went from doing 40 CT scans per day, to 25.
It’s a problem, but I still feel very confident while in the hands of the Cross cancer team.
Smylie is also really good about reaching out to his fellow oncologists across the globe for insight, and trial info too.
The Cross cancer doesn’t have as much to offer as the Princess Margaret in Toronto in terms of technology and treatment (Toronto offers TIL, Edmonton can’t).If you have any more specific questions, let me know.

thank you for taking the time to respond. My brother lives in Red dear and has the option for going to Edmonton or Calgary. I am more concerned about the future treatments available in Alberta incase mom runs out of options and needs to be part of trials ( whihch i hope she doesnt ) but we need to be prepared. Brother wont be able to take her to toronto for treatments due to financial limitations.
mom just completed 3 rounds of ipi/nivo -

Hi sks2019, something to consider which I am sure you have already done is getting medical coverage in Canada. Is your mom Canadian?
