Forums General Melanoma Community Anticipate a move to Charlotte, NC – Suggested Drs. / Clinics Please

My past topic related to our need to transfer into one of the carriers that provide coverage through the Affordable Care Act. I lamented that our choices around Greenville SC are very limited and appear to exclude coverage for some of the drugs my wife is and will be taking in her battle with Melanoma. I am looking into some of the carriers in the Charlotte area, and it appears that we may have better options in that community.  I have no problem moving to the area if it means we can get her the care she needs.  The carriers listed, include Aetna, Cigna, Humana and Coventry One. I am only starting to research their coverages but at least Cigna has some Oncologists for us to work with.

      1) Does anyone currently have coverage with any of these carriers – with the plans provided under the ACA?

      2) Doe anyone have suggestions for doctors or clinics that they are using?

Thanks in advance for your help.

      John

I'm not going to be much help- we're not in the area so I can't recommend hospitals or doctors. It's also going to be hard for people to give any info on Obamacare plans unless they're in the Charlotte area as plans (as you've found out) differ from state to state to some degree even with the same carrier. We have Aetna, but not through the exchange. We've been pretty happy with it for the most part, but again that's probably pretty unhelpful. I see my local oncologis and radiation oncologist (a lot more than any of us would like), then I occasionally see or have procedures done at a larger center 4 hours away (in our state) and have another specialist and have occasional consults/procedures at a center out of state. We've never had any problems with coverage for those distant appointments. The only problem we ever had was last fall when I was trying to get into a clinical trial- there was a miscommunication/mistake and we thought they wouldn't cover me for the trial. Turns out they just needed more info about the trial to make sure it was legitimate (i.e. make sure we weren't trying to commit fraud) but once we gave them that they approved it no problem.

I'm sure you've already seen this site, or something like it, but I would contact a navigator. I was talking to one for a while last fall (we were considering dropping me from the insurance and getting a second plan when we thought I wouldn't get trial coverage). She was super helpful in answering questions about coverage and doctors (in or out of network, specialists, etc) for the plans. Keep in mind though that they're not experts- I often had to wait a day or 2 while she looked into the details of the plans.

          Good luck

Hello,  I can not help you with the insurance info, however I c an recommend a melanoma specialist and surgical oncologist.  Dr. Asim Amin and Dr. richard White are at Levine Cancer Institute at Carolinas Medical center.  Dr. Amin is a medical oncologist and Dr. White is a surgical oncologist.  They both specialize in melanoma and they are both absolutely wonderful.  We have BCBS and never had a problem with insurance.  I wish you luck in your decisions.
