    My dad just found out he has stage 4 melanoma. Doctor said the disease already spread from his rectal to liver and I saw a lot of spots in his liver that doctor can't do the surgery. I'm so worry. He has only one option for treatment is ipilimumab (yervoy.) Doctor said that medicine only 10%-15% response. If the medicine respone, he can live 6-7 years. If not, he is done.

      Has he been tested for BRAF mutation? If his melanoma tumors have the mutation there are other drugs that can be used to quickly reduce the tumor burden (e.g., Zelboraf) such that a treatment like ipi could be more effective (potentially).

      I'm sorry to hear your Dad is facing a battle like this. Do you and your Dad live in the U.S., and if so did his doctor also discuss clinical trials as an option in addition to IPI? If not (or even if so), is his doctor/oncologist a melanoma specialist?

      Since his melanoma was mucosal (rectum), has he been tested for the C-Kit mutation?  Gleevec is a medicine that targets C-Kit, and C-Kit is a mutation found in mucosal melanoma.  Look for JerryFromFauq's profile.  He has had rectal melanoma with mets elsewhere – stage IV for many years now.  He's on Gleevec and doing ok. 

      Please make sure your father is seeing a melanoma specialist.  Yervoy is not the only option given the general info you've posted.  There may be other reasons the doc suggested this course of treatment, but we try to throw all options on the table here and make sure you don't miss something obvious (like C-Kit).
