      They are dysplastic or atypical moles.  If you have never had melnoma the feeling is more and more becoming that these will likely never become cancerous, if you have had melanoma they worry a little more but it is still unknown if they really are "precancerous".

      I have had melanoma (a year ago, Stage I), but I've had so many of these Clark's nevi since then. . it's unlikely they all would have turned into melanoma or I'd have had about 20 melanomas.  When mild, the doctor doesn't even re-excise, even if it extends to lateral margins.
