Durable Complete Responses in Heavily Pretreated Patients with Metastatic Melanoma Using T Cell Transfer Immunotherapy

Clin Cancer Res. 2011 Apr 15;[Epub Ahead of Print], SA Rosenberg, JC Yang, RM Sherry, US Kammula, MS Hughes, GQ Phan, DE Citrin, NP Restifo, PF Robbins, JR Wunderlich, KE Morton, CM Laurencot, SM Steinberg, DE White, ME Dudley

Currently available and experimental therapies for metastatic melanoma produce very few durable complete responses and, thus, a low chance of cure. Rosenberg et al from the National Cancer Institute report results of a new approach for these patients: the adoptive transfer of autologous tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) selected for antitumor activity and expanded in vitro. The study involved 93 patients with metastatic melanoma who were heavily pretreated with standard and experimental regimens….

This is such wonderful news since there is so little out there which actually promises a durable response.  However, and of course, don't we always have a "however" in our world, this treatment is extremely time consuming and labor intensive.  I have to wonder what the cost and what the reaction of the insurance companies will be.  Just thinking out loud (or in type).

This is the treatment recommended as the next step for my husband.  We are still in the infant stages of the planning but I will gladly post our experience and progress.  Thank you for taking the time to post the information.

Thanks so much for posting. I was just telling my husband, "seems like just about everything I know about melanoma, I learned from this site."

      Thanks again,
