I met With an Oncologist at Duke to go over my options. I just finished a year of Adjuvant therapy using Opdivo every 4 weeks x12. The follow up scans showed that the Melanoma came back in the lungs and liver. Duke suggested a Trial of dabrafenib trametinib and navitoclax. (I’m BRAF+) I’ve also set appoints to talk to MD Anderson and Levine cancer center in Charlotte. (not until Dec 11th and 9th) If I follow through with these appointments it will delay my trial with duke by several weeks. Would it be useful to follow through with these appointments and hear what they say or will I be hearing the same thing with options for different clinical trials that seem to be just a toss up of which would work better? Thanks

I’m sorry you’re going through this. What about getting a second opinion from another oncologist at Duke (or elsewhere) before the appointments in December? Did you discuss this concern thoroughly with the oncologist you saw? Is there a way that he/she is leaning toward (start the trial or wait until the appointments)? I would suggest calling the oncologist you saw and ask if there is another doctor that could review your case and see what they think. Doctors don’t (or shouldn’t) get offended about second opinions: they understand these are major decisions that need to be carefully weighed! I think that would be a good option, because what if the doctor at the Levine cancer center suggests you do the same trial? You’d be disappointed you didn’t start it earlier. At the same time, the specialist at the Levine center may have a better option – so if you’re unable to get in there earlier (or at least see if they’d give an opinion?), see what another doctor thinks you should do after reviewing your chart.Let us know how it works out/what you end up deciding.

Here are a couple of ASCO 2019 summer onclive video oncologist panels talking about targeted therapy options and what to do after adjuvant progression on immunotherapy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wtsnbDw4DQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-19Vk_kA0k
