Spitzoid Melanoma – Second Review UCSF

I am contemplating sending my pathology for a second look to UCSF. My pathology was Atypical Spitzoid classified as melnoma.  I had the wide excision, SLNB not recommended.

My reasoning for a second look is that spitzoid melanoma is rare, and they are specialists. I am at a great hospital in Baltimore, but have heard many people on this site suggest a second look from UCSF since they see these more frequently.  Any thoughts on this in terms of what information I may gain from doing so?  Is genetic testing sometimes a piece of this second analysis?  Basically, I want to be as armed as possible in the event this progresses.

Any guidance would be appreciated.  Thank you.

          Hi MMH,

I can't help answer some of the specific quesitons you have, however I just contacted UCSF about sending my pathology slides down for a second opinion.

I had a punch biopsy done which confirmed a junctional spitz nevus, however in a few days I'm going in to have a WLE done to remove more tissue as this type of nevus is commonly misdiagnosed. I'm from Canada and am hoping I will be able to send my pathology slides down for a second review. Our health care system is a little different up here.

Since you are from the States it would probably be an easy process for you. I would definitely recommend doing so for peace of mind and just a second opinion altogether.

Hoping someone else can maybe help answer those specific questions.

          Keep us posted!
